How much is this laptop worth...

Here's the background, my friend bought a Gateway laptop before going off to college. He thought it would help him get stuff done at school as well as when he came home. After the first semester he decided that he wanted to take his desktop machine to school. The laptop has pretty much sat until now (we're seniors in college now). He's starting to get desperate for cash and decided he needs to sell it. My girlfriend has been looking for something similar to this, although no one is really sure what the thing is valued at. Here's the specs:
[*]Celeron 450
[*]64 MB ram
[*]5.5 GB hard drive
[*]12" display (i think)
[*]1 usb port, 1 ps/2 port
[*]cdrom and floppy drive
[*]the only battery he has doesn't hold a charge, but my girlfriend would always have access to a wall outlet
[*]integrated modem
[*]3com ethernet pcmcia card

Also remember that it was only used for 1 semester, and then sat for 3 years. So what does everyone think it would be worth? Thanks for your input.

Similar spec'ed laptops on eBay seem to be going anywhere from 275-400. Since the battery is dead I'd probably knock off a good $50-75 off the price of the machine with a good battery.

$250'ish.

Laptops are a tough sell. No warranty, and for another $200-$300 you can have a brand new one with all the bells and whistles

I was wondering if/when someone was going to hint that PRICE CHECKS ARE NOT ALLOWED ;)

Well, let's see - I just sold this laptop to a friend for $150:

CompUsa AmeriNote

300 MHz Celeron
128MB RAM
6 GB HD
Great batery - holds a charge for at least 2.5 hours
13.3" screen
1 USB
PS/2, Serial, & Parallel Port

Plus I threw in a combo Linksys Modem/NIC, and a PS/2 splitter (for 2 devices)

Tell him to just sell it on ebay. I wouldn't pay much for it if I was you. Than look on the Hot Deals forum for one for your gf.

heh, not when you can get P4s for <$1000

it's not a linear relationship when it comes to laptops. You can still get $100 for a penitum 133 laptop w/14" passive matrix screen. From what I've seen on ebay, ~387.00 is what should be expected.

Not really a price check, though; he's not trying to sell it on here, just a valuation, like if someone wanted advice on a used car.

Thanks to all of those who replied with useful info.

And for those commenting about no price checks, I think Hubris said it best:

Which happens quite a bit on here.

I'd say you'd get about $300-350. that's a rough estimate of what i got for laptops in the past with the specs around there
