How much is the total you have to pay DMV annually?

So how much are you paying for your car registration + VLF(vehicle license fee) + other fees? What car and what state?

I live in California and the registration fee is ridiculous. I work my butt off to buy a new car(330ci coupe or G35 coupe) and I'm now looking at $1000+ registration fee, annually, that I'm going to have to pay if I choose to get that new car. Plus, the insurance premium that I'm going to have to pay for being 22. It's like I'm being punished for this. But I digress.

Well, I don't know how it works in other states but in California you need to pay annual registration fee to get that YEAR(2004) sticker for your car. The annual fee that you pay includes the registration fee(usually $28) + VLF(vehicle license fee) The VLF is the killer here and that's making the annual fee above $1000 for me. It's based solely on the value of your car and the rate is a percentage of that.

it costs u a freakin grand to reg that kind of car? When I read that average fee's were gonna be like 270 in Cali this year or whatever, I thought wow some cars probably cost around 400$ to reg and others around 150 or so... a grand... christ...
 
Registration or property/use tax?

Registration is like $14 (another $30-45 if you want a special license plate).
Taxes depend on value of the vehicle.

$13/ year for a 1997 Honda Civic EX in NY.
(btw - the value of the car is not a factor in the registration fee.)
 
Err.. when do you pay registration fees? I've owned my car for less than a year (bought Aug 02). Also anyone know how much it is in Michgian?
 
The fee is $200 here (Connecticut) but then there's car tax you have to pay annually. Something like 2% or 3% of adjusted price of your car.
 
Remember, if you itemize your Federal Tax form, car tags are considered a form of local taxation, thus they are deductible. 🙂
 
Hmm I think the Sentra was $54 for most recent registration. Maxima was like $220 or something can't quite remember.

Negative on that. Only the part, if any, of the fee that is base on vehicle value is deductible.

 
I think it's $35 bucks every 2 or 4 years. I can't remember for the life of me. I've never kept a vehicle for more than a year and a half so I've never run into registration myself.

My CPA has been taking them off my taxes for years, not that it really makes a difference, but every few pennies helps.

Of course maybe our tag system is set up differently than other states. It is based off of a declining car value is how much your tag fee is.

You're busting your butt to buy a BMW or an Infinity, and then you're complaining that they charge you an extra $1000 a year?! Buy a cheaper car! Jeesh.
 
mugsywwiii, might as well not have anything nice in life then right? Are you saying that since I can afford the car, I should not complain about paying extra for this and that? If the VLF was a one time thing then I can deal with it. But this is an annual thing. My friend lives in New York and he doesn't have to pay for such fee(VLF) You have to really look into the reason or logic behind VLF. For example Joe drives a 1985 Toyota Corolla(with coolant and oil leaking at every parking lot and black fume coming out the exhaust) and John drives a 2003 BMW. Joe & John both work at the same company and receive the same pay. Joe has to drive 45 miles to work and John only drives about 5 miles to work. Yet, John pays $900 more a year because he drives a newer/better car and also occupies less "street time". See any logic in that? What's next? The electric company charging you more base on the price of your computer because you're running a P4 2.4Ghz instead of a 286 33MHZ? How about charging you more per month for electricity base on the price of your TV because you have a 40" HDTV rather than a 14" TV?





 
i pay about $40 each year to have my '81 f250 regged in nevada, i think anyhow, this year i let it expire for about 4 months, had a hard time getting it smogged..while driving to a jobsite accross from the sheriffs station a cop pulled me over 🙂 paid a $40 fine and i was set again..

my gf pays a few hundred for her 2002 mustang though, they really rake you over the coals for new cars, seems very unfair to me, should be a set price for everyone as registration shouldnt matter on model/year

damn right
i think i pay a 20 dollar license fee and then a tax on the car value, since im not rich, its usually 60-80 bucks here in NC for me, i change cars fequently so i dont feel like im getting ripped for the same vehicle

i still am getting ripped off for it, but i dont FEEL like it...kinda
