How much does it cost for a clutch replacement?

True, but depending on the car...the labor can be high. Also, there may be added cost for them to re-surface the flywheel.

Type of car? FWD, RWD, or AWD?
 
Most clutch specialty shops in Nor-Cal charge in the area of $500 for the average car. Of course, there will be exceptions to that...

You still shouldn't need a clutch replacement on that car, I've got a 2002 and my clutch is still going strong.
 
Still SHOULDN'T need a clutch replacement...indicates poor shifting skills. I had 215K on my 96 Dakota when I sold it...still on the original clutch.

Well, everytime I shift, it's not completely disengaging so it's rough getting it into gear. Unless all of my synchros went out at the exact same time.

Probably the clutch master or slave cylinder going then.

I can tell you the book times:

To replace the master OR slave cylinders: 0.5hrs labor. Figure $50 - $90 for the part.

To do the clutch disc/pressure plate: 5.0hrs labor. A clutch "set" would be around $225 with the throwout bearing. The flywheel can get expensive on those things, if it can't be turned ($300+) - but it may not need to be.

In any event, from the symptoms you describe, I really think you've got a bad master or slave cylinder. The clutch isn't slipping, it's just hard getting it into gear right?


 
It costs a lot. Good mechanics are expensive these days, and that, of course, drives up the price of all mechanics, LOL. 😉

So, since a clutch is a pretty tough job, yeah, it's going to cost a lot more than you "see" in parts cost. Try $800 and up for front wheel drive. 4WD or AWD? Let's just say it's more than FWD. RWD might be a little less, but not much. The biggest difference between the three is the number of driveshafts that must be removed before the clutch parts are accessable.
