The ones that are in the islands in the drive through are serviced via a contracted company and not the bank directly, which tends to lead to more errors and thefts.

My wife's father works on ATM's for a living and swears up and down by this.

Thanks, good to know.

wow...old thread bump...

I've had 3 different banks lose my paychecks when deposited through the ATM...WaMu lost 2. After that, ALL deposits are made inside via a human teller. In 3 of the 4 cases, my money was deposited into someone elses account, and of course, we didn't find out in any of them until our checks started bouncing. YES, they always made it right, covered any and all check charges, whether charged by a bank or retailer or creditor. It was however, a major PITA to get straightened out, and always took several days at the best. On the one check that wasn't deposited into someone elses account, it was never found and never cashed. I had to go to the company and have a new paycheck issued. Of course, THAT took more than 2 weeks while they ran a trace on it through their bank.

ATM's are for withdrawals, not deposits in our experience.

That's strange... it sounds like you're very unlucky somehow.

My employer does not have direct deposit, so I mail my paycheck in every payday (usually with some other checks I have received in my life and have saved up since the last deposit). Knock on wood, I have not had one lost in almost 4 years of doing this.

Otherwise, I will hit up the ATM for cash.

Do banks still have tellers?

I find it amazing that banks get away with charging for anything other than going to a teller. It is a lot cheaper for them to handle an online or ATM transaction.

I figure if all that money can sit there without being stolen, then my check is probably fine.

What's the point of replying to threads that are over 6 months old...when you really aren't adding anything to it?

I popped a $20000 check in last year. it was at my branch of the bank's ATM though, and I kept the receipt, so no biggie.

It was 4 minutes from the post before me to my post. Not half a year.

I prefer ATMs. More privacy, somehow. Maybe it's that I'm part of a generation thats grown up watching screens. And tellers just seem to have more ability to make mistakes.
