If they charge extra for delivery, nothing. If the driver is rude or rude looking, nothing. If they are nice and delivery is free ~$1. I never get it delived though because I had a bad experience from one who stole $4 from me.

Rude looking? WTF are you talking about?

You know the ones that have a look on their face like you are stealing their time.

We've got those before...

*sigh + eyeroll* that will be $12.56 sir *sigh*

Even worse when you tip them 3 or 4 bucks and they don't even say thanks.

I have NEVER had that happen to me. Are they delivering in 50+ inches of snow or something?

That's the normal delivery guy in my experience.

A couple of bucks at most... if you don't like it, find another job that pays enough that you don't need hand outs from other people.

I would probably kick you in the face if I had to deliver to you, but then again you are ScottyB.

Handouts? It is funny that only the cheap bastards feel the need to reply to this thread.

They act as if you're stealing their time because at only $1, you're basically a non-tipper.

Look at it from the other perspective. On a Friday or Saturday night, a capable driver will take 30-50 deliveries in an 8-10 hour shift. That driver usually looks forward to about $80 to $150 in tips and mileage for the night, depending on the area and other factors. Delivery drivers don't rack up those tips from $1 tippers.

Heh, timely. Just ordered pizza and the guy accidentally gave us the wrong order. The store is trying to track down the driver before he gives our order away. Hoping for some free somethin for my pain and suffering. I was hungry an hour ago, by damn ;)

So how much -do- delivery drivers get paid on average. And is the custom of tipping the driver a result of some time-honored custom or inertia driven collusion? (That couldn't have made sense, but I used up my "medium-to-big word style points")

Yeah, if they charge a delivery fee, I can't see offering a tip. There's a place around here that advertises free delivery, but has a pick-up discount. If that ain't a sneaky little practice. Heh.

Trying to get a handle on what their perspective might be like. There's often a feeling of "deservitude" (i.e. I "should" be getting...) that pops up where people are sure that they should be getting something in return for their efforts. And how do you give good/poor service by driving a pizza to a house? Just can't wrap my head around it, dag nab it. I'm tryin

Actually, don't make the driver dig for change.

If it's $18.81, don't give the dude $22 and ask him for the 19 cents. If you want to give him $21.81, that's OK, but if everyone did that, we'd have a sh*Tload of change to count at the end of the night, and that makes after-close/after-shift checkout take a long, long time.

Minimum Wage, no bennefits, and they drive, gas-up, insure, and maintain their own cars. The economics wouldn't work out if the norm was a $1 tip. There would be nobody to deliver your food. Wrap your head around that!

I have given a guy $5 before for the excellent service I recieved. I determine the tip amount before I give it to them. If they look/act rude they get none plain and simple.

~ 10%...but a lot more if they save my friend from dying if he's shot. Probably like 15% in that situation.

So they don't get gas money? Any stipends for delivery? I really don't know the in's and out's of what the deliveryfolks get paid. I just know that, as an actor, I will often work for pennies. Talk about crap economics.

If the place is touting free delivery then hell, it's free, right? ;)

I shoot for $3 on my usual $12 pizza. I order through papajohns.com and they don't charge for sales tax or the extra delivery fee I've been charged when I order through the phone. $11.99 + $3-4 (bad weather) tip for a 5 item large seems like a hot deal to me.

I do get $.18 per mile driven from the store. That averages to, at most, $1.80 per hour. Still under $7 per hour to purchase, drive, insure, and maintain my own car. I don't know exactly what other places pay, but it's not very different. Needless to say, without worthwhile tips, it's not a worthwhile job.

I hear ya. That's the sort of thing that I feel needs to be put out in a booklet, so that either folks truly understand what a tip can mean to a driver, or so that the business owners will pay a slightly higher wage and not "assume" that the tips will come. Moreso with waiters/waitresses in restaurants. I really don't think people understand things.
