this includes things like sports you play, things you collect, or creative things you work on.

i asked myself the very same question, checked mint.com, and found that historically i have spent about 500$-1000$ per year. that includes golf, cycling, computer games, programming books, etc.

unfortunately this year i am already at 500$ due to a new interest in collecting ancient coins, so i better tone it back.

and yes, if you make money off your hobby, you are allowed to count it

Most of my hobbies have high start-up cost but after that, very little per year.

Examples:

Guns are expensive, ammo not so much (especially given how seldom I get out to shoot)
Tools are expensive, wood is pretty cheap
Music instrument is expensive, practice is free

Ammo isn't expensive? Are you out of your damned mind?

I shoot mostly flintlocks these days. No brass, no primers, can buy black powder in bulk (keeps forever if stored right) and lead is still pretty cheap. Plus with the reduced rate of fire you couldn't shoot a fortune in one sitting if you wanted to; even at $0.50 a pop you'd shoot less $ per day than taking a cheaper per shot cartridge gun to the range.

my hobbies are primarily going to the gym, playing football on a team 2x a year, going fishing in the warmer months, video games, watching movies, and watching sports. watching sports doesn't cost me anything unless i go to the event. watching movies is redbox'ing or buying a $5 bluray somewhere, so that's not much. my HT was ridiculous though, but that is a one time expense. the gym is $20/mo but my work pays for it. fishing i probably spend like $200/yr because once i have my stuff i don't need much. i really don't buy many video games either, i tend to stick one for a long time.

i also make mobile apps in my spare time sometimes that make a small cashflow come in on the side, so maybe it evens out some of my hobbies.

so overall ... i got no clue.

not sure if traveling counts as a hobby or not though.

Probably close to like 5k, maybe more.

2013 I probably spent close to like 10k. Built my server room. Also built a new 24bay file server, that was like 3k right there.

It's actually still not done, still need to decide how I do the hvac, then I need to seal it up, insulate it, and drywall it for sound deadening. Also have parts on the way to build a VM server. I may possibly build a secondary one for failover.

Too damn much.
Board Games
Table top miniature gaming
Scotch
High end beers
Tech gadgets

"Hobby" fund is festively plump.

I don't really keep track.

I probably spend a couple grand a year on guns and ammo. Maybe another grand on cleaning stuff/targets/range time. I spend another~$1500 on cell phones (not the service, just phones and accessories). I don't spend hardly any money on computers now though...so that's good.

Oh...and add in another couple grand for lil rudeguy's gaming habit. That's usually $100 per month for games and then upgrades as needed.

I recently decided I want to collect nerdy figures. I just ordered a couple of blind box Android figures and want to find other types of nerdy dolls to collect.

figures from anime
does not get much more nerdy than that

Don't keep track, but less than 3k a year. Some years it higher when I need a new bike, snowboard, or other gear...and some years it is definitely less. Bought a new bike and camera in the last year, so it has seemed particularly expensive this year.

Ah, that makes more sense then

Cartridge ammo is expensive enough that I've pretty much stopped shooting pistols and rifles at ranges. I still like to do sporting clays but that's expensive too.

Photography can be an expensive hobby! I upgraded my kit over the last two years spending about $20K but that will be spread over 5-8 years so the per year cost is probably a bit over $3K/year.

Items purchased since June 2012...

1. 2X Nikon D800E DSLR bodies

2. Zeiss Distagon 21mm lens

3. Nikon 35mm f/1.4G lens

4. Nikon 50mm f/1.4G lens

5. Nikon 85mm f/1.4G lens

6. Nikon 24-120 f/4 VR (walk around lens)

7. Sigma 150mm macro lens with OS

8. Nikon 300mm f/4

9. RRS tripod with ballhead

That doesn't count the trips I've taken so if you add in travel costs with hotel etc I'd add another $1500/year or more so in total, probably close to $5K

It comes in spurts. I'm spending money on music related stuff this year but before that the last big purchase I bought related to music was a Hartke bass amp and Ampeg cab back in 2009. Last year was good for me $$$ wise so I plan on picking up a new guitar, bass guitar (musicman stingray!) and drum kit in the next month or so.

Hmmmm I don't really need a fast car, nor upgrade parts, or trips to the drag strip. Boats are a giant money vortex funelling directly into the ocean yet I want another one.

Really need to get back to finger painting for a cheap hobby.

Last year, the goats cost me about $6000. Not sure I'd characterize that strictly as "hobby" though.

I just started taking photography more seriously, and my first DSLR arrived Tuesday. The first time my wife picked it up, "why doesn't this zoom more?" I just got permission for new lenses for the camera = more money on glass this year.

Hunting/fishing/boating; heck, gas for the boat probably runs upwards of $1k each year. Toss in the high price of ammo, a new rifle or shotgun here or there, cost of hunting/fishing license, new clothing (camo)... Plus the monthly boat payments; about $1500 per year (or whatever it is; wife takes care of the bills).

Does going out to restaurants to eat, and writing reviews count as a hobby? If so, toss in at least one night out, and frequently two nights out per week to the total. Cooking is also a hobby, but I probably spend less than $100 on cooking utensils each year.

I spend a minimum of $5,000 a year on jump tickets. Then there's all the other shit. I'd say a cool $10k isn't out of the picture.
