quotes like this is why soccer sucks (and soccer is a term invented by brits, contracting the full name of the sport, association football)

"David Beckham has extraordinary toenails," wrote John Carlin, who interviewed Beckham for Real Madrid TV. "They are incredibly strong, healthy and, above all, thick.
"The arch-angel appeared at 12:15," El Mundo's Raul del Pozo wrote.

"The Real Madrid hymn was sounded and God's ray of light shone as he of the winged feet -- feet that don't smell -- rose on the platform with his ponytail, a white handkerchief in the pocket of his powder blue jacket and with a timid smile on his face."

The guy who posted about baseball being the way of life in latin america can suck it. Also
the person who proposed that people in places like England are just as apt to support teams
like Man U and Blackburn as Americans are to support their domestic teams. Where that falls short
is how huge of a world wide audience Those leagues have, they easily make up the largest world
wide spectators of any sport.

I'm not saying that Soccer is better than all other sports, that'd be silly, though its ,my fav. Just that
its audience easily eclipses all other sports.

Hockey and baseball are US and Canada exclusive? Are you high?

Have you ever been to Japan or Korea? Central/South America? Baseball is INSANELY popular. How do you account for the huge amounts of Latin-American players in baseball, and the recent influx of Asian players? (not just Japan now either, Korea as well)

Hockey?? Ever been to Western Europe? Finland, Sweden, Russia, Czech Republic, Slovakia are all hockey hot-beds. The Russian leagues produce some of the best players in the world and have more talent than even the US I'd say. Even England has a hockey league, although not anywhere on the same level as those countries I mentioned.

Yeah, those countries like the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Mexico, Cuba, etc. hate baseball. I mean nobody from those countries even play baseball. I mean there aren't MLB baseball academies in some of these countries and never has a person from any of these countries ever played in MLB.

I'm not saying that baseball is more popular than soccer - it isn't. However, to say that it's a USA/CAN thing exclusively is completely wrong. It's extremely popular in Japan (hell, even MLB plays there a few times) and some Latin American countries. It's even OK in S. Korea.

The day soccer becomes popular is the day it is split into 4 quarters. Have you noticed that in international basketball it is 2 halves instead of 4 quarters in the NBA?

America is about captalism, which means commercializing the fvck outta any sport to make it marketable.

How much do soccer players earn? From just quickly looking at some salaries, it looks like baseball players are actually paid more. Alex Rodriguez, the #1 paid MLB player, signed a $252 million contract - $25+ million/year for 10 years.

It works differently with soccer, they have to pay transfer fees just to get players for example with Beckham, it cost Real Madrid $40 million to aquire him, then they pay him $15 million a year or something close to that, It also cost real $63 million just to get Zidane, thats $100 million just to have two players on their team, this isn't even counting salaries.

Most Americans have to have high scores in their games or else the game sucks, 2 pts for a basket, 6 for a touchdown, and anyone who thinks soccer is more boring than baseball is a tard, baseball is Americas past time because its a lazy a$$ sport

If us americans didn't stop hitler, you wouldn't have soccor in europe so be grateful!

And i believe sylvester stallone and pele stopped hitler

player salaries are (for key memebrs like zidane, ronaldo, aimar) range from 4-7mill a year often.... there is also goal/assist bonuses but these still dont add up to the stuff that pro baseball/basketball players make.

Baseball is not our "national past-time" because it's a lazy-a$$ sport. It's because the game's been a part of our national history for so long, and so many people have grown up playing and/or watching it, just as with soccer in other countries. No, not all professional baseball players are in uber-shape. But they're damn good at what they do, and that makes them damn good athletes. Besides that, the average non-pitcher in the MLB is, generally, in great shape (steroids notwithstanding, heh). And just because the games themselves aren't fast-paced does not mean practices and workouts go the same way.

As far as soccer goes: it's a great sport, and I love watching both Italy and the US in the world cup. But just because I enjoy watching it doesn't mean I know anything about it. Hell, I love to watch basketball, but only know the names of a few star athletes and such.

Just like a few others in this thread have said, soccer is borderline-insanely popular among children and high school-aged athletes. It's starting to pick up on a collegiate level as well, just not professionally. I wouldn't doubt that with the talent coming along here nowadays, America will be a valid world cup-threat within the next few years.

I think it's kinda weak to imply that soccer( footy if you will :p ) is nonstop action. While baseball is slow and football has a stop-go-stop-go way about it, most soccer games I've watched are just as slow. Most soccer games I've watched go something along the lines of:

Dribble ball
pass
pass
pass
pass
dribble
stolen by other team
pass
pass
pass
dribble
Exciting Moment!!! Nope, sorry Offsides
kick
pass
pass
pass
(continue x 200; Throw in rare goal randomly)

Just because the guys are moving doesn't mean it is intense action or anything. Just like the rare baseball game where guys are popping off homeruns left and right, or football games where you get back to back TDs every 2 minutes, soccer has those rare exciting games too. But please, stop acting as though it is nail-biting, hardcore excitement the entire game.

BTW, I like soccer and wish it did have more popularity here in the US. No, I don't keep up with oversea leagues but I enjoy the game never-the-less.

So you think i started this topic to start an arguement? Why would i do that. I merely asked you to answer a few questions, something that only a few of you have atempted. While the rest of you complained & whined.
I explained in my post withthe link I provided that baseball is present in Italy, and is more popular than in other European nations.
It may be present, but it aint popular by a long shot.

Stop getting into specifics. You said Americans don't play world sports. They do. Baseball, golf, tennis, etc. are world sports. Just because their "primary" (whatever that is) sport is soccer doesn't mean anything.
I`ll agree with gold and tennis, cos every country in the world play it. But no baseball, just a handful of countries playit.
Just because Japan hosted the world cup doesn't mean anything.
It means something. The world cup is the most popular and mostly watched sporting event in the world. Japan has some great players, and their J-League is a joy to watch.

The Hillsbrough disastor isnt something to joke about. How would you like it if i critisised you for Sep11th? You would`nt, so dont. And fyi, i wouldnt take the mick of of sep11th.

I probably could school you, BoomAM on the field. I know soccer inside and out after playing it for 16 years, but that doesn't mean I HAVE to pay attention to some team, on another Continent, which I rarely see on television anyway. I never took interest in knowing stats, and who is where in any professional sport. I enjoy a good match on television or in person, but thats about it. I enjoy the game, not the "who is who" part. You can kiss my soccer playing american ass you arrogant fvck.
Real mature.
And i highly doubt you could "school me" on footy. Ive played sunday league for 9 seasons, and follow all transfers and goings on in the world of football.

BigJ, dont even get me started on the Rugby vs A footy thing......

M4H, exactely the type of answer i expect off you. Its good to see that these months where we havnt had a disagreement hasnt tainted you humor! :)

A bit odd stating this, seeing as Footy IS no stop, and that A footy is all set plays.

It seems that alot of you are getting worked up over this, becoming insulted, ect;

American sports are world sports, too. Baseball is very popular world-wide. The world goes beyond Europe.
Ha ha ha ha.....who told you that?
Just cos Baseball has the world series doesnt make it popular worldwide. I`ve been around europe, asia and austrailia, and i`ve never seen anyone, anywhere mention or even play baseball.

Are you an idiot? Baseball is extremely popular in the US, Japan, and is a way of life in Latin countries.

They have baseball teams in US, Canada, Japan (very popular), Venezuela, South Korea, Cuba, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, etc.

There's the MLB (US/Canada), Japan's baseball league, Venezuela, Mexican League, etc. There's even a type of championship or round robin type tournament for some Latin countries.

It's even played in some European countries, but obviously not nearly as big as the above mentioned ones. And last I looked, baseball was an Olympic sport with plenty of countries playing in it.

I thought that I'd quote myself here since you didn't respond to my post. It's fairly obvious to anyone that follows baseball that it's more than just a US/Canada sport. It's huge in Japan and many Latin countries.

And maybe I shouldn't have asked that first question ;)

I'm going to make a dumb comment like you and say because Japan co-hosted the World Cup they're not really serious about it or they wouldn't have had a co-host.

Sorry about the Hillsbrough incident, but I have no clue what that is, but I didn't mean anything in specific. People pretty much view European soccer fans as violent hooligans.

quoting the post above (didnt wanna actually quote cuz it was too long :p) about fast-paced soccer.... I firmly believe the english game is more fast-paced than any of the other power-house leagues. The premier league seems to revolve around long passes and generally more fast-paced play. The Spanish game, however, while admittedly isn't as slow as the Italian league, tends to be more defensive than the English game, and is more centered around possession and build-up.

Im getting the impression that my suspicions were correct, that the vast majoroty of US citizens dont have a single clue about Football, and have no idea how their country does in it.

and the sad thing is even though we don't give a sh*t about soccer err I mean "propper footy" we still made it to the quarter finals. now if we actually carred we'd domniate just like every other sport the we americans care about, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey, REAL FOOTBALL (If any counrty was not afraid of the sport)
