the person who proposed that people in places like England are just as apt to support teams
like Man U and Blackburn as Americans are to support their domestic teams. Where that falls short

Hockey and baseball are US and Canada exclusive? Are you high?
Have you ever been to Japan or Korea? Central/South America? Baseball is INSANELY popular. How do you account for the huge amounts of Latin-American players in baseball, and the recent influx of Asian players? (not just Japan now either, Korea as well)
Hockey?? Ever been to Western Europe? Finland, Sweden, Russia, Czech Republic, Slovakia are all hockey hot-beds. The Russian leagues produce some of the best players in the world and have more talent than even the US I'd say. Even England has a hockey league, although not anywhere on the same level as those countries I mentioned.
Yeah, those countries like the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Mexico, Cuba, etc. hate baseball. I mean nobody from those countries even play baseball. I mean there aren't MLB baseball academies in some of these countries and never has a person from any of these countries ever played in MLB.
I'm not saying that baseball is more popular than soccer - it isn't. However, to say that it's a USA/CAN thing exclusively is completely wrong. It's extremely popular in Japan (hell, even MLB plays there a few times) and some Latin American countries. It's even OK in S. Korea.
The day soccer becomes popular is the day it is split into 4 quarters. Have you noticed that in international basketball it is 2 halves instead of 4 quarters in the NBA?

How much do soccer players earn? From just quickly looking at some salaries, it looks like baseball players are actually paid more. Alex Rodriguez, the #1 paid MLB player, signed a $252 million contract - $25+ million/year for 10 years.

It works differently with soccer, they have to pay transfer fees just to get players for example with Beckham, it cost Real Madrid $40 million to aquire him, then they pay him $15 million a year or something close to that, It also cost real $63 million just to get Zidane, thats $100 million just to have two players on their team, this isn't even counting salaries.
Most Americans have to have high scores in their games or else the game sucks, 2 pts for a basket, 6 for a touchdown, and anyone who thinks soccer is more boring than baseball is a tard, baseball is Americas past time because its a lazy a$$ sport

soccer rules people.....best sport ever(to play anyway) i never really followed it on the global scale
player salaries are (for key memebrs like zidane, ronaldo, aimar) range from 4-7mill a year often.... there is also goal/assist bonuses but these still dont add up to the stuff that pro baseball/basketball players make.
Baseball is not our "national past-time" because it's a lazy-a$$ sport. It's because the game's been a part of our national history for so long, and so many people have grown up playing and/or watching it, just as with soccer in other countries. No, not all professional baseball players are in uber-shape. But they're damn good at what they do, and that makes them damn good athletes. Besides that, the average non-pitcher in the MLB is, generally, in great shape (steroids notwithstanding, heh). And just because the games themselves aren't fast-paced does not mean practices and workouts go the same way.
As far as soccer goes: it's a great sport, and I love watching both Italy and the US in the world cup. But just because I enjoy watching it doesn't mean I know anything about it. Hell, I love to watch basketball, but only know the names of a few star athletes and such.
Just like a few others in this thread have said, soccer is borderline-insanely popular among children and high school-aged athletes. It's starting to pick up on a collegiate level as well, just not professionally. I wouldn't doubt that with the talent coming along here nowadays, America will be a valid world cup-threat within the next few years.

It means something. The world cup is the most popular and mostly watched sporting event in the world. Japan has some great players, and their J-League is a joy to watch.

Im getting the impression that my suspicions were correct, that the vast majoroty of US citizens dont have a single clue about Football, and have no idea how their country does in it.
and the sad thing is even though we don't give a sh*t about soccer err I mean "propper footy" we still made it to the quarter finals. now if we actually carred we'd domniate just like every other sport the we americans care about, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey, REAL FOOTBALL (If any counrty was not afraid of the sport)
