<< how much do computer techs make >>

Depends on 1) what company, 2) just how many responsibilities they have, 3) what kinds of products they support

You guys pay somebody $40/hour to put together computers and troubleshoot, like in a mom & pop shop?

between 8-37.50 an hour probably, depends on how good he is, how long he has been doing it, who his clients are, and where is he geographically...bunch of factors to consider

Where I live, people who can assemble systems, do trouble shooting and tech support are relatively low payed. Probably $12-$15/hour. Building systems isn't all that complicated, thus its tough to command a high salary. And tech support jobs are relatively low pay anyway.

Whatever it is, they deserve it. Especially if they have to do tech support with end users. I did that for two summers, and it cemented my decision to stay out of computers for a career...

Umm, I think you people are confusing some things. There's no tech on the face of this planet making $40/hr full-time, I don't care how many video cards you can troubleshoot in an hour. Personally, I make $3,000/hour installing printer drivers, but I just don't get much business. When someone is inquiring "how much you make", it's not how much you charge, and it can't be calculated hourly because I don't know of many techs that are busy 8 hours out of the day. If you are busy, then you probably work for another company, in which case there's no way you will ever make $40/hr as a tech.

:)

i call BS, i dont care how much experience the guy has had, 40 an hour is crazy for a guy who just puts together systems, either stashing cocacine in the power supplys and selling them or hes blackmailing someone.

probably between 12-15 is appropiate.

LOL. No offence, but I think your dumb for taking that much responsibility for that little cash.
Or of course your title could be over glorifying the position of Help Desk.

yeah we aren't talking about how much your shop charges you out for - how much do YOU bring home 8/hours a day for doing this?

and so are you.

So am I?
I don't understand, I have never stated what job I held.

Before I got laid off I was making 47 + benefits at Verizon.

If thats dumb, then I love being dumb.

I agree, between $7 and $15 per hour seems to be the norm, depending upon the region and position. A friend of mine literally fell into a helpdesk/technician job at a hospital making $21/hour, he will top-out at $28 within 5 years, and he's always asking me for help. lol! That is the exception, though.
