What he meant was:

.... a shack, 2 modern cars (that he put together), a dingy, expensive vacations (for an Ethiopian), and dinner (twice a week)......... :(

So true. $50K/year now is like $42K when I was in college. Seriously, I've been making over 50K for two years and I still don't have anything...besides a Honda Accord. Where did all the money go?! Probly into AT Hotdeals forum. Those hot deals...gotta get them all!

50K is really crap if you live in Hawaii or New York because everything are expensive over there, but my brother lives in Utah.

How did you make 40k a year right out of college as an air force officer? I thought the starting pay was around 26k.

of course, living in NYC, my rent is about $2k a month, so cost of living is a huge factor.

edit: sorry, I forgot:

occupation: work on wall st.
degree: bs in engineering from cal.

wow

Im not slaming or anything im just curious as to what you do on wall street as an engineer? or does that have nothing to do with it?

i work in an equity portfolio management group (we manage a hedgefund, some mutual funds, and client private accounts). We are very quantitative, so there is plenty of room for engineers or mathematicians and the like.

our can be tough.. but the work is fun and the pay is great.
i know an ece phd (semiconductor devices/physics) who went into wall street to manage accounts. it's a matter of understanding what you're investing in, right? the same goes for another ece phd who was hired by a law firm and sent to law school to cram for the bar. he becomes a patent attorney.

Was that MS?
I was under the impression that they didn't pay particularly well compared to many other companies and that is far above the average starting salary offer to CS grads.

Major: Computer Science
School: Southern Oregon University, 2001
Occupation: Application Developer
Salary: I started as a temp making $16/hr several months before graduating. Nine months later, rate went up to $23/hr. 4 months after that, I took a permanent position at the same company for 49k.

Current title is Software Engineer and salary is in the mid 50s. This is in Southern Oregon, a relatively low cost area with almost no tech jobs at all.
The worst part about my job is that I make quite a bit more than programmers at other companies in the area. It may sound like a good thing, but it means if I lose my job, it would be almost impossible to find another one in the area that pays this well. I got a call about another local software developer job, but they told me the position paid mid 40's and there was no way they could match my current salary.
