of course, living in NYC, my rent is about $2k a month, so cost of living is a huge factor.

edit: sorry, I forgot:

occupation: work on wall st.
degree: bs in engineering from cal.

Graduated in May, 2003 (1 year ago as of this upcoming weekend)
School: Penn State
Major: English / Sociology (dual)

first job out of college was doing some call center work and basic programming (for the ticket and sales system that the phone reps used). made $9/hour... got promoted a few months later into a marketing gig, but still made only $25K w/o benefits.

last November, I finally moved to a real job as a datacenter tech, making $30K... my 6-month aniversary is coming up in a few weeks, at which point I'm expecting and hoping for a 10% - 15%-ish raise.

$36k as a database/documentation guy... I left 3 months later for another job at a significant increase. The original contract just said that I'd be non-exempt and that I could leave at any time and be let go at any time. I took advantage of that and they couldn't say a thing except good luck. They were great about it though... they still paid me my vacation and sick days I never got a chance to use... was only there 3 months! :D
