The front is basically gone I think. The tow truck place wants $550 just to take it off their hands. How much can I get for something like that? Would I be better off just giving it to the tow truck place?

I agree, sell it as is, either as a rebuildable or for parts. The motor and trans assembly should be worth at least $1,500 or more depending on condition and mileage. If it is just the front end, you can rebuild it, provided the frame itself is still straight. Then it would be a lot of work. How did you crash it ? ? Any injuries to you ? ?

Scrapping it might get you $100 on a good day. Way better to try and part out any pieces of it that are still useable.

Wait, did I miss the big story where FB crashed and burned like everyone told him?

FB, piece it out. Hope you only have a few scars to learn from and nothing serious.

$550 is ridiculous. They're hoping you'll give it to them. Unless it's been there for a little while?

If it is an insurance write-off (eg the insurance company paid off your loan, paid you for the loss, or is replacing the bike), then it isn't your problem to deal with.

If the tow company is charging fees for towing/storage, then your insurance company needs to deal with them.

Depending on the extent of the damage, you can easily make $1000-2000 parting the bike out on ebay/craigslist.

Is the insurance company saying the value is $550 and you're buying back or is the tow truck place saying you need to pay them $550 for the tow or they'll keep it?

If there is a market for the parts (which in your case, there will be) you can pretty much always get more money out of a vehicle by parting it out than you would for the salvage value from the insurance. However, it will take time, patience, some work on your part, and a place where you can store a bike that's in the process of being disassembled.

Well he's been talking about getting a more powerful bike so maybe this is just insurance fraud.

Was heading home on a two lane expressway at around 1AM on a Friday night. I was completely sober (I'm allergic to alcohol, hate drinking) and was riding in the passing lane at probably about 55-60mph. No other cars on the road.

There's this really short merge where traffic merges onto the expressway. My memory is foggy due to the concussion, but the last thing I remember is thinking "No, no, no, don't go into my right of way" and swerving right to avoid rear ending someone.

It was a straight road. I think what happened was some guy merged onto the expressway and immediately merged into my left lane, the passing lane. He basically cut me off, so I swerved to the right and rear ended him. The front got smashed and the bike flew to the right of the road. I took a dive and landed unconscious on the right of the road.

The other car just left. Probably a drunk.

My roommate and friend who was also taking the same way back to our home (we had gone to the same restaurant that night) arrived 5 min later and slowed when she saw my bike wrecked. She called 911, I went to the Stanford trauma center / emergency room.

I remember being put into the ambulance and awakening in the ER. When I stand up I get dizzy and I still have some short term memory problems. Got road rash on my elbow, knees, hip. I was wearing my jacket and helmet. The concussion sucks.

Cost:

All I had was liability on the bike.

$6K bike - gone
$500 - to get back from tow company - the guy there said he'd had to get people from that same exact place where I crashed - mergers don't look and crash into people
$5K - hospital bills after the insurance takes care of it? Would be $35K without insurance I think.

I'm doing ok.

+eleventeen?????

That's what happens when you don't go for turbo busa.

yeah I was thinking about that....I was definitely one of those who recommended something larger...

edit: glad you're OK, glad it wasn't your fault now I don't feel bad for having recommended the bigger bike!!!! :( :( :(

I've been in situations like this where someone was getting ready to merge in. To be honest I've used the 120hp to zip past the mergers into a space between two vehicles. But if they merge straight into the 2nd lane...wouldn't have expected that.

How are your legs? If you were only wearing jeans I'm surprised your jeans weren't torn to shreds?
