I understand business expenses, the stylists rent a booth, depending on the location it can be anywhere from $200 to $2000 a month. After that, outside of buying supplies everything is profit. Unless the ones at the shop I use to hang out at sold the hair at cost, they had stylists who were making $400 a day just on hair alone. All the costs you brought up are paid for by the owner who pays for that out of the booth rentals.

Just about every tech I've known was cash only, so they were paying little to no taxes. You can't tax income from cash that isn't reported. Watch the Chris Rock documentary, it should be on Netflix, some of those stylists are living like royalty.

Why do you keep talking about hair stylists when this thread is about nail technicians?

The nail techs I know receive 600-800 in pay per week plus tips (could be another few hundreds depending on how busy the salon is). I'd say they take home between 50k-60k/year. Most of it is cash though.

This seems more reasonable. And this would be for those that has a big list of clienteles.
I live in Orlando, I dont believe any tech can make $100k. Maybe the owners.

Enough to finance what appears to be an endless supply of kimchi.

Seriously, that's all I remember from going to the salon with my Ma as a child. Kimchi. Kimchi everywhere.

They sure like putting technician in titles these days. I've even heard of "Burrito technician".

I think engineer has grown just as much. Everyone is an engineer now.

I am 32 and I grew up knowing only 4 types of Engineers.

Mechanical
Civil
Chemical
Electrical

Engineers now apply to anyone who solves problems.

Yeah, basically anyone who does anything now is a tech(nician) of some sort and anyone who comes up with an idea is an engineer!

100K US seems like a reasonable figure for those who work in a high end spa and salon where the cliental don't live in our economy. 50k for those working the mani pedi foot massage joints showing up everywhere would be pushing it at best.

It depends on your location but to give you an idea. Mom of one of my friends would make between 50 and 60k but she owned her own salon and worked from 10am to 6pm. She normally worked alone but had one hired employee that helped during the busy hours. So I am assuming that if you don't own your own shop, 30k is a safe bet.

Location and traffic matters!

Sometimes yes, mostly no.
Yep. Doing nails is just a regular hourly job with tips. It's like being a waitress or a hair stylist. $10-15/h plus tips. Saying nail bitches make 6 figures is like saying hair stylists make billions because this one guy named Vidal Sassoon made billions. The other 99% of hair stylists are women who don't have a high school diploma and the other 99% of nail bitches are immigrants who struggle to make rent every month.

Dude, this one short order cook named Dave Thomas made billions! You should be a short order cook!

Many shops, I'd even say most it's not hourly, they rent a booth and have no hourly pay. The shop by my work they pay $1000 a month for the booth rental. After that whatever they make, minus cost for supplies is their income.

It's like delivery folks that think because they made $50 in an hour on a Friday night that they are making $100k a year.

Since no one wants to answer your question directly. I will. My grand mother in Hawaii (Vietnamese and very good at her job) made on average $75,000 a year in a small shop. A friend of mine that is a nail technician (and yes I say technician because without proper training and education you can easily give someone chemical burns, destroy thir nail beds, cause injury to the hand or feet, or transfer diseases) in a small town makes roughly $55,000 a year.

At these wages it does take you out of poverty level. And if you stay up to date on all of the latest trends im sure there is the possibility of making much more. Myself I spend around $160 a month on my nails. Thats on 2 hours of work a month. My friend said if she were to calculate her earnings based on each client she would get to keep around 60% of each customer. So roughly for every $100 made, you make $60. Its not too bad.

Dang, I've been biting my nails for free. I got to branch out. I bet searching craigslist for people who desire to bite other people's nails for them is going to get me into weird country.

I'll stop you right there. You do realize how unsanitary that is, right? Under your nails is one of the most disgusting places on the human body. It is a breeding ground for all sorts of bacteria. Even if you washed and sanitized your hands 10 times a day, you wouldn't rid yourself of all the bacteria that lays under your nails. And you put that in your mouth? Have you ever heard of nail clippers?
This is why we have nail technicians. They are properly trained and taught about the chemicals and diseases that are acquired in the profession. As well as they are tought how to properly deal with many issues that occure in the human hands and feet. It's not just about making someone look nice. It's their health you are dealing with also.
Were you aware that certain bacteria that lay under the nails could cause diseases that rot flesh? If proper sanitation is not used then it could cause someone severe medical issues?
