A good one can easily make 100k a year, a shop a few buildings down from where I work has a couple. One's single and drives a brand new fully loaded Porsche Cayenne SUV, she's never not booked weeks in advance. Not sure how many clients she can do a day, but I know some pay around $250 for the uber fancy with rhinestones and air brushing sets.

One thing I've learned working by a beauty salon and just knowing high maintenance females. There's no such thing as a recession for good salons, females will always find a way to get the the money to stay looking good, There's a few hair stylists there who have crazy nice cars. There's one that's single who has this limited edition Infinity G37, I've never seen this exact model before, she said it was custom and had to be special ordered. A few of the other females there have nice BMW's.

I've never asked any how much they make, but if you're single and driving a fully loaded Porsche you're making a good amount of $$$. Also all these chicks dress nice and have MK bags and such.

This is still guessing at best.
You can make $50K and still drive Porsches, BMWs....
I can buy any of those cars you mentioned and I don't make $100K/yr.

The good ones make about $800-1000/week, cash. So, not too bad, really.

Down sides of that is that they have to breath in toxic fumes all day, scrubbing people feet, etc...

This sounds more realistic and we're talking about the "good ones".

The Caynne lady has the turbo one which is a hair over 100k, her payments have to be be around 2k a month. That's more than a lot of people pay for their mortgage. And she also has a nice house, so that's a mortgage too. Even if she's living week to week, I don't have to guess that she's still making far more money than I do. I couldn't afford her car + house alone, forget eating and dressing in designer clothes.

If it to good to be true, id have to let her work my feet over and see what "other" services she might be offering. :p

You can buy a used one for much much cheaper.
And how do you know she lives in a nice house ?? You've been there ??
This is just like my mom telling me from here say without concrete evidence.

What is this, extreme denial? How do you know she doesn't? The money could have been inherited for all we know. Not a big deal either way.

OK, the whole point of this thread was to to find out what a nail technician make.
I asked for some concrete evidence.
So he sees a lady that has a porsche and thinks she makes $100K/yr.
When does driving a porsche = making $100K/yr ??
This is exactly like my mom who hears from others and thinks some of them make $100K also.
All I asked was if anyone actually knew people that does this for a living and how much they make.

$10 an hour plus tips. $15 an hour for high end places.

Not even half of your mother's estimate.

This is my guess of course.

100K as a nail tech? Maybe in La La Land. There are much more competition now. Most techs earn their money in tips.

I would be surprise if they earn more than 50K.

I could not do it because of the chemical smell. Too strong for me.

When I see her Thursday I'll ask, I know how busy that shop is, and I know how much money 1 female will spend in a single visit. Between hair, nails and feet my ex dropped $500 every 2 weeks. While this amount isn't common, it's not uncommon either. And a few regulars would drop a hellova lot more than she did. Her chick charged $100 for hands and feet, before the tip. She stayed booked because of so many regular clients. Even if she only saw 4 clients a day she would still right around 100k a year. 6 a day seems more likely since it took just about an hour for the typical client. At the good high end shops you won't see the nail techs and stylists sitting around doing nothing, they stay working on clients.

This thread's title has CAN in it, it's not asking what's the average. I'm in no way sayng 100k+ is typical, the average would be very low, shitty nail techs who work at a mall or run down Asian shops don't make much. And they make up a a majority of them. But at a high end salon 100k a year wouldn't be anything remarkable.

Anyone can look up the internet and see what they usually make which I did already.
I would like to know if anyone actually know people that does this for a living and how much they make.
From the way I heard from others...
The owner provide the store front and the materials(nails, etc...).
The technicians themselves does the work.
A set of nails usually go for ~$18-$25.
The owner keep 40%-60% and the technician keep the others + what ever tips they get.

I hate the facts that Vietnamese are now associate with nails.
Its like its the only thing they can do to make a living.
This one pretty Vietnamese I know came here 9 yrs ago and doing nails is the only thing she knows how to do.
Her English is still terrible.
She came here when she was only 23. Could have done so much better and stuck doing nails for the rest of her life.

yours isn't much better.

sounds like the G37 IPL.

and MK bags are cheap. I don't go out with chicks wearing anything less than a hermes. I want my gold digging bitches to at least look the part.

I normally don't get in between the squabbling of mortals, but...

Quebert, you're way off. Your numbers are way off. Your assumptions are way off. Stop it.

Which salon your ”ex” goes to that charges $100 for hand and feet? What did she get done? $400 for hair? LOL.

The nail techs I know receive 600-800 in pay per week plus tips (could be another few hundreds depending on how busy the salon is). I'd say they take home between 50k-60k/year. Most of it is cash though.

My numbers are way off? hummm I remember paying for her hands and feet, I'm not talking everyday manicures & pedis. Depending on what you have done, some were spending well over $100. And as for $400 for hair making you laugh that's nothing really. The hair for weaves alone can cost up into the thousands, then you have to pay to have it stitched in. Again, I didn't say this was the normal price, but there are plenty of females who spend way more than $400 getting their hair done. If you don't believe me watch the Chris Rock documentary "Good Hair" I know it's not about hands & feet, but it's a good look into how much black females can spend on their hair. The same shit applies to nails and feet, just on a cheaper scale.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=UrJamE_hcck

this is the documentary, having dated a female who'd spend up to 14 hours straight every other Saturday at a salon I can attest to it.

Yes, some girls spend a ton of money getting shit done, yes the hair for weaves cost a ton of money but NO the techs are not making 100k a year unless it's an elite place in NYC, Beverly Hills or Miami. How much did you tip when your girl got 500 dollars worth of stuff done every 2 weeks? And also you didn't have any issues with her spending $12,000 a year on hair and nails?

Common sense mixed with basic math tells me if said nail tech charges on average $100 per person, and can on average do 5 people a day she could make $500 a day. I only paid for the nails and feet, and I always tipped $10, I don't know what the standard tip is. But even if nobody tipped $500 a day is pretty damn good money. 95% of the clients pay cash, so I'm sure most techs don't claim it as income. As for the hair stylists, $200-350 depending on what the complexity of what needed to be done. And her stylist was always working on 2 females at the same time.

That's not including the actual hair, which I can't begin to guess the mark up on that is. But I know anywhere else that sells shit marks it up at least 20%, usually a lot more. If we use 20% as a baseline, the stylist was probably making more from just the hair than I make working 40 hours a week. Fuck factoring in what she charges to do the actual work. Watch the clip I posted, that stylist has $10k coming thru her shop on a good day, you really don't think she's making 100k? And her shop isn't in BH or somewhere expensive, it's in a semi ghetto'ish area of Atlanta. The females in that clip all spend over 2k a month, the bi-weekly wash and condition alone will cost them about $160. And anyone who spends $1k+ on a weave will be in for a that kind of maintenance.

You're acting like every single penny paid for a service goes into the tech's pay check. So all mechanics are probably bringing in 135k a year as well? I know someone who owns a spa, where massages, nails, etc. are performed. Not a single employee makes near 100k, even the owner. Taxes, insurance, rent, utilities, advertising, etc. are all costs that have to be covered somewhere.

Hmm, may be I should tell members of my family to move their salons to the ghetto. Seems like the people there either enjoys getting ripped off, incredibly rich, incredibly stupid, or all of the above.

BTW, I'd wager a bet that you can't really find anyone person that do nails, also do hair.

I understand business expenses, the stylists rent a booth, depending on the location it can be anywhere from $200 to $2000 a month. After that, outside of buying supplies everything is profit. Unless the ones at the shop I use to hang out at sold the hair at cost, they had stylists who were making $400 a day just on hair alone. All the costs you brought up are paid for by the owner who pays for that out of the booth rentals.

Just about every tech I've known was cash only, so they were paying little to no taxes. You can't tax income from cash that isn't reported. Watch the Chris Rock documentary, it should be on Netflix, some of those stylists are living like royalty.
