I have a computer with Win 7 and plugs in directly into the DSL modem via RJ 45 cable.

Is there a cheap and easy way to find out how much data I use? I am just curious.

who's your provider? I find my usage from Comcast's website, since I'm on Comcast. Also, DDWRT keeps track of usage.

Around 50 GB because the cap is 80 GB.

If I were able to let loose, probably average 3 GB per day, so 90 GB.

Everytime I feel like we're getting the short end of the internet stick, I just review a Canadian's situation. Sorry dude.

Typically a minimum of 400 gigs a month. Mostly Netflix.

DSL naked from ATT, no land line phone, nothing but DSL only. I only have use one computer right now so the RJ-45 cable connects the computer directly to the DSL modem. Nothing is in between, no router or switch.

Mine varies a lot, depends on what I do. Typically 100-200GB per month. Though it's gone up quite a lot since we got fibre service here.

This month I used 128GB in and 394GB out. I've done over 1TB in a couple days before:

I feel sorry for people who have caps on their home internet. Our cell caps here are ridiculous but at least at home I can use as much internet as I want. :awe:

no clue

This month is will be high because I had to redownload all of lil rudeguy's Steam games to his new rig. Over 24 hours of solid downloading and they still aren't all done.

You know you can copy the directories over and the steam client will discover them as long as you make it one of the directories steam installs to.

I switched him to 8.1 from 7. I used the "pool" option in 8 so that his data is mirrored between the drives. So I formatted everything, popped the old drives in the new rig and then redownloaded. So there really wasn't an easy way to keep anything and cleaning out the drives was a priority.

If you login to ATT's site, can you see how much?

About 1.1 TB per month.

Sep: 1082 GB
Oct: 987 GB
Nov: 1071 GB
Dec: 1169 GB (so far)

Lots of torrents, especially TV at 720p, movies at 1080p, and a fair amount of pr0n.

Even assuming only half of that or 500GB is video, and assuming highest quality at 5GB per hour that is 100 hours of video or 3 hours a day. How the hell do you find time to watch 3 hour of TV per day?

I probably watch a movie or a couple of TV shows per day, so maybe average 1.5 hours. Then the occasional weekend marathon viewing session when I get into something.

I've downloaded some multi-season TV shows accounting for dozens of GB that I have yet to watch. Something for a rainy weekend.

Same with movies. Many, many movies that I have yet to watch, or just haven't yet been in the mood to view yet.

A lot of the pr0n is collected from the day's updates and not immediately watched.

Much of the bandwidth is outgoing. Especially if a particular torrent takes a very long time to complete and I know it's not well seeded, I'll seed it up to 20x.

Many older torrents from public trackers fail to complete after downloading 80 or 90% or more. I'll give up after something sits for a couple of weeks without finishing.

Often, I'll download two or three versions of something and toss out lesser quality versions or else cancel the other torrents when one of them completes.

I throw out a LOT of crap. I'll hear about or be curious about a movie, download it, watch 15 minutes and delete it. (e.g. I started to watch Riddick last night. What a steaming pile of crap.)

My Usenet since June 2008. Switched to Comcast Business HSI July 2010, so no 250GB cap.
Not sure how to get my regular monthly "internet" usage since I can't seem to find that data on their website. ^_^

Ah, I bet you're with Cogeco. I had that same plan for the longest time. That was considered a lot of data when we got it.

?

Someone has a shitty ISP, doesn't mean all of Canadian ISPs are like that.

I have 100/5 w/ 500GB/month here.

and how much does that cost? i only have 24Mbit (until i get fiber) but only pay £7.50 for unlimited bandwidth.

is there a canadian isp that gives unlimited data?

$90CND/month for that plan.

Unlimited? Not sure, ISP plans vary a lot across the country.

In the really old days a lot of the plans used to be "unlimited" (as in, don't go too insane with bandwidth and we won't phone you and threaten to suspend your account), but that was when bittorrent was very new. Now things are much crappier.

Nope, the other one. Just swap out the first "c" with "r", and the ending "co" with "rs".

Apparently, it's possible to negotiate a better plan by threatening to leave. If you do, they'll actually give you a pretty reasonable bandwidth cap (>150 GB), free modem rental, and a bill of $50-ish. Compare this to the stock plan of $55/month + $8/month for modem + 80 GB/month cap.

I would just leave. If you can get cable, you can go to one of the other providers that buy from distributel.

I left Rogers phone, tv, internet like 8 years ago.
