I guess you're right. Some love cirrhosis, and some don't.

Binge drinking in college != liver failure. Being an alcoholic later in life does.

The thing is when I go out on a Saturday , I drink about 9 pints of stella ( 5 %) and maybe a few shots of vodka, I get drunk but Im still in control, my speech goes a bit and I slur but Im having the time of my life, now I don?t want to damage myself in later years or in fact now. On Tv in the run up to Christmas there?s a lot about Alcohol abuse and the like. I did a search and I couldn?t really find what I wanted to know. I don?t want to cut back, but If I need to I will, but can anyone put any input to this ?

You're fine. I drink every day and Im a student. Everyone says I have a drinking problem and I should cut back, but what for? I think it's common behavior for someone my age (22) and I should have the fun I want to have now, because in a few years, I wont be able to do this anymore.

 Party on

Drinking every day (in excess of a glass of a beer or a glass of wine with dinner) is not normal behavior. It doesn't matter if you're a student or not.

please change your name to sacrosanctidiot. your personal opinion has little do with persons other than yourself. there is research suggesting that 1-2 glasses of wine or beer is beneficial to one's health.

if you slur around a bunch of ppl who are also drunk, what difference does it make. alcohol over time is bad on the liver. Only bad on your brain when you run head-on into a tree
AFAIK, alcohol is neurotoxic (damaging to the brain). It's just a matter of how many cells you have to spare. ;)

Wow, I was almost certain I had said that a glass a day was ok...maybe you want to make sure your reading skills are past that of a first grader. Hazardous drinking is described as greater than 2 drinks/day for men and 1 drink/day for women. Thank you for playing.

For further abuse: Drinking is excess of 4 drinks a day leads to a 7.5 increase in risk for cirrhosis and 2.8 increase in risk for ENT, Esophageal, and liver cancer. This is in men, it's lower in women.

It starts with "fatty liver" which can occur in college, and proceeds. But you are right, if you can stop, the chance of developing cirrhosis is lower.

First of all you are not in control. You might think you are but you are not. Take a video camera and have the bartender put it somewhere where you'll always be on film. Then watch it sober. Here in the US many states have .08 blood alcohol level has the dividing line between sober and intoxcated. That equates to 2 pints in one hour time.

That been said, ignore all that. As a student you must go through some of the same things we all did. Some of things you'll do while drinking in school are:
1) drink till you puke
2) wake up after a binge with someone you had no intention in being with while you are sober
3) get in a drunken brawl (which means a pathetic attempt at actually fighting and then end up drinking with that person at the end of the night)
4) get all weepy-eyed and admit to your friend that you are p-whipped after all
5) go to class drunk (or was that only me?)
6) do something highly dangerous and highly stupid that will leave you ok, but either having or causing property damage
7) kiss the wrong girl at the right party
8) make a fool of yourself and be the life of the party at the same time!
9) reveal your inner most secret to a group of strangers
10) post silly things to an on-line forum

All I can tell you is I helped my best friend bury his brother from hi sliver shutting down caused by drinking and he was only 30 at the time. He started drinking at your age, got hooked, drank all the time, and died. What a way to go. Social drinking is cool. To do it to get drunk all the time and if it is every weekend not cool. May say you lived past half your life right now. But what do I know I just buried him, I quit drinking like that and I am still alive :)

If you're physically able to lift a drink you should keep on going. THat's the golden rule.

anyone know the percentage of college kids that binge drink? I know at my school it was > 80%, yet I've read studies that have the number more around 10%. Hard for me to believe.

I really don't believe the number is even close to 10%. Probably more like 40-50%

Getting fvcked up on the weekends != not learning.

I went out a ton, still got great grades, and I've got several job offers too.

I think thats the whole point of binge drinking in college. Its the only time in your life when you can really let loose and still suceed.

You realize the definition of binge drinking is having 5 or more beers, right?

You RARELY hurt yourself from the actual alcohol... it is much much more common to hurt yourself from falling, getting in fights, doing stupid things while drunk.

I think if you are serious in school, you don't binge drink. I would have never gotten through CMU if I drank 15 drinks on the weekends. All of my friends who *graduated* never drank much at all.

People who can't have a social life on weekends need to re-evaluate their study skills.
