Somehow I have a hard time believing that trains and cargo ships fill quite the same shipping role...

No. We should say "fuck it" and drive whatever we want because we realize that driving a car that gets a little better mileage is not going to have a meaningful positive effect on the environment.

And while the numbers presented in that article are in fact astounding, it doesn't really take into account just how much cargo those ships carry. The amount of cargo carried being equal, I'd guess these ships produce a significantly smaller amount of pollution than any other alternative, such as smaller ships or even a highway of trucks.

It might have a meaningful positive effect on your wallet though.

Neither do trucks but people are talking about them throughout this thread...so I threw in trains more to replace the "trucks" than the ships.

Make all the stuff here and ship it by train! :D

Yes, they pollute as much as that many cars but only for a few kinds of pollution. If you're looking at CO2 emissions the cars will produce significantly more. If you are only picking a few certain factors when you're doing the comparison you can make it say whatever you want. If you're comparing methane production (methane is considered a greenhouse gas) you can say a cow is as polluting as a million cars because cars don't release methane.

Unless you're looking at the whole picture you can make data say whatever you want.

Fuck it, I'm taking a container ship to work.

Yep, this is not about CO2 Link

Shipping is responsible for 3.5% to 4% of all climate change emissions

This. The Emma Mærsk (largest container ship) produces about 1000 tonnes of CO2 per day, assuming it runs 280 days out of the year it "only" produces as much CO2 as ~72,000 cars (assuming a car gets 25 US mpg combined and travels 12,000 mile per year).

Shipping is responsible for 18-30% of all the world's nitrogen oxide (NOx) pollution and 9% of the global sulphur oxide (SOx) pollution.

Although SOx is not a green house gas. In fact it is the opposite. The problem is that NOx and SOx are noxious.

Yeah, we better spend billions of dollars trying to get more hybrids on the road.

Only those that believe what they hear in the news think that way.

Agriculture is the main cause between the livestock and the equipment.

Most people's lawn mowers put out more crap than a week of commuting.

This article helps debunk the idea that many people in ATOT are critical thinkers. It's amazing to see so many people put 100% reliance on the "facts" in that article, which have been twisted around to come to some bizarre conclusion - that pollution from cars is insignificant.
