How many windows can you open ?

i've had ~75 windows open..... all porn... at that point W2K wouldn't even let me open any more. i'd right click on a link and open a new window and nothing would happen🙂

Remember,

In regards to your 2nd question

"windows resource meter show no system resources and user resources. What do these resources mean?"

-snip----------------------
System resources include both physical and logical resources. A physical resource are things such as the amount of installed RAM, amount of free disk space, IRQ's, number of ports COM, Serial, Printer), etc. Physical resources are limited in number by their very nature. A logical resource is generally a table of some sort that the operating system uses to track application activity, memory usage, etc. A logical resource may or not be limited in some fashion. One example of a logical resource is the FAT table, which is limited in the number on entries it can accommodate. Windows also maintains similar lists, some of which are limited in their size such as the USER heap and the GDI heap. These two areas of memory (which were limited to 64Kb in Windows 3.1) are used to track most of the details of open applications and user activity. Filling one of these two memory areas (by having too many open windows for example) would often cause Windows to halt or crash. In this case these two memory areas can also be thought of as system resources due to the crucial role they play in ensuring the proper functioning of the operating system.

Much better explaination here >>Resources vs. Memory

Win 98 is better at handling these than previous but
Win 2k is the BEST at this.

ManuTOmanU mentioned opera, which is a good browser. i happen to really like netcaptor (can be downloaded from www.netcaptor.com). the basic premise is similar to opera where you can have many websites open but only one program open.

hm... last i remembered...
had:...
icq
aim
winamp
njstar
getright (5 DL's at once list of ~50DL's)
MBM 5
10 media player windows open and playing
+ 35 somewhat IE windows all on www.xbox.com

started l...a...g...g...i..n...g... but no lockups or anything...

win ME, 256 mushkin rev2 😀

new way of benchmarking???

pssss???

Opera is awesome... it is my standard... win2k doesn't work for me... not enough drivers available... Germany sux in providing drivers... not Germany but one big a§§ German Company... Deutsche Telekom (DT) who wants to close down unlimited access... They are an oligopol, where I live it is an monopol...I would say...

Somehow I got away with opening 43 in Win98se with 128mb + this instance of IE and a bunch of other junk (MSN messenger, etc - 14 system tray icons) 😉 I too got the out of memory error on the 44th window.

Well I didn't read all the other replies, but I can get
IE x many (like, 20+)
Excel
Word
Eudora
Photoshop
Access
Netscape x many (several, I couldn't be bothered after 4)
CRT x many (similar)
SecureCRT x many
RealPlayer
Win Media Player
Nero
XEmacs x many

all at once, on my 64M K6-3 system, burning a CD and ripping another while listening to web radio and browsing/editing without hiccups in audio playing or burning and still adequate browse/edit rate, with dual-monitor setup.

I don't know why it still works but hey, it does, I hope when I get a better system it stays this stable. Never seen an out-of-memory error.

Cheers,

John.

I had open: eudora, winamp, two netscape windows, 1 download dialogue box open, netmeeting, IE, mcafee virus scan, dnetc, blackice, and ICQ running. Opened up 35 additional explorer windows with no problem, then I got bored. This is in Win2k with 512MB of RAM...

I have 59 Internet Explorer windows open as I type this. Opened to different websites.

Tried to open Word and other applications and it just wouldn't do it. Click on the app and you hear the error sound.

PIII 600E with 256 MB memory running Win2K.

Interesting little stress test.

PII 450 384mb RAM, w/ winamp playing i got up to 35 IE windows before it started getting wacky.
(win98)

Ok, just did another test.....in linux.

Got up to 150 Mozilla windows open before I figured that I might not hit a limit any time soon. System did not really slow down noticably either. Oh well, another plus for linux I guess (for those who need the 100+ windows open 😉 ).

hey ManuTOmanU -

You're right, Opera rocks.
😀 Good things about it:
- Lightspeed fast
- Any OS
- Small d/l
- more info about page
- cool, new and useful interface
- doesn't cripple system (low mem requirements)

:frown: Bad things about it:
- no Java for Windows
- takes up more screen
- manual bookmarks (no import or copy a la "Favorites" folder)
- no plugins
- fvcking add in corner

Wow! Opera..I had to give a report on that and also HotJava (not too good, but awesome java support!) Just wanted to add that in....Nice to see poeple using these new browsers, I didnt think anybody did.....

Remember,

<< Problem is win2000 does not support 2 monitors with different resolutions and refresh rate. >>

I have two different monitors (size and brand) at two different resolutions and different refresh rates in W2000.

I don't know how you got your info but it ain't true. Move to W2k and have as many windows open as you can fit on your monitors.

PS.
I just found out "who" told you about W2k limitations. But so that you know, this limitation happens only with single dual-head cards. If you use two cards like I'm using then the limitation doesn't exist.

Hey there is opera 5.02 out... this is doing pretty well in java and stuff 5.01 didn't perform as well...

Go for the latest opera....!!!

But now one thing... Don't you think it matters what filles the window? Is it the same if it is a blank window or if www.anandtech.com is opened???

I don't think so...

I just installed Opera 5 today, at work and at home. I LOVE IT! It's fast, and much easier to use. I highly recommend it to everyone. The only problem is the banner, and that's pretty easy to get rid of 😉

It has a few bugs with sites that are IE only, but other than that it's awesome. Faster, easier, convenient, I love it! I'm posting off it right now.

Geekish Thoughts -

How did you get rid of the banner?

Also - is there any way to obtain Java support? Can you get and install Sun java somehow?

You either buy the Opera license or you don't...

If you don't you are stuck with the add's or you aren't...

way to do it doesn't matter... things you need can be found on sites like I don't know if I can post it here.

:frown:
lets hope you accept it...

I believe the zOrder property of the MS Windows class is one byte, thus limiting your desktop to 256 windows, if you open a bunch of message boxes (simpler windows, thus requiring less memory), windows can actually handle up to 256 of them, at that point you get warnings (in more message boxes, hmm ironic) telling you you are reaching the window limit and should start closing them, if anyone has ever programmed message boxes in VB or VC++ then you may have forgotten to increment a loop that has a msg box in it, you may have seen this error, besides that you would never see the error in normal everyday use.
