My understanding is that, in a gross generalization, Indians tend to emphasize memorized knowledge.
The anecdote being that a visiting professor was hated because he didn't have all the facts in the book memorized, and would ask questions that were not in the book, but could be answered by applying the principles taught by the book.

i don't think it has anything special to do with indian americans - have someone from any kind of group be successful in new territory, and it'll open the flood gates for others who identify with that person and are inspired by their actions
