There is a bit of science behind it since I think they also study Etymology to understand where the word came from. So if they hear a word they don't know they can guess how it might be spelled knowing the original language.

My understanding is that, in a gross generalization, Indians tend to emphasize memorized knowledge.
The anecdote being that a visiting professor was hated because he didn't have all the facts in the book memorized, and would ask questions that were not in the book, but could be answered by applying the principles taught by the book.
