I dont think anybody really cares about the "science of spelling". IMHO its pretty insignificant with respect to the rest of the education. For Indians it has become a social status I guess, for the rest of the country nobody really cares about it enough to put years of dedicated 200% effort into it.

I used to work with an Indian-born American, and he once said that in India, if you got anything below excellent marks (or an A) in school, they made you sit out in the summer heat studying until you got it right.

Don't worry, we still retain the texting while driving crown. I bet the extra 'l' in your title was typed while making an illegal u-turn.

sounds about right, in India there is no excuse for failure, only reasons. Govt does not feed lazy so everyone has to work their asses off to get somewhere in their lives.

Watched this last night, could hardly spell any of the words they were giving.
You're right, the parents should be punished for not feeding her. 14 yr old, tall and thin. Not sure how many times she has tried winning this.

they are smart!

Uh, I hardly think spelling equates to being smart. I think it equates more to wanting to spend a great deal of time learning how to spell words, a skill that most of us find quite useless. Kind of like scrabble or chess.

I heard this morning that she's spent the last few months reading the dictionary...twice.

Good luck to her, hopefully she can translate her dedication and intelligence to something that will make her some money or positively impact others' lives.

The more important question is 'When are people going to realize that spelling bees are not worth caring about?'

Are spelling bees even really relevant anymore considering that most "text" these days is completed via smartphone/computer/tablet?

That $40,000 prize would be better spent on young kids helping out in research/science instead of reading the fucking dictionary.

You can end up making yourself look pretty retarded relying on spellcheck or autocorrect.

That said, I don't think any of those words are real.
