I'm not saying it is impossible to use the word ghetto in a non-offensive way. I'm just saying it is possible for someone who grew up in your neighborhood to be offended that you refer to it as a ghetto.

Ummm....we knew we lived in the ghetto. Anyone who said it wasn't would be denying the truth.

Its ok to tell the truth. It really is. Sometimes the truth sucks. But not lying or sugar coating doesn't make saying something racist.

I think you are missing my point. I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just saying it is possible for someone to take offense to your statement. The word ghetto carries with it lots of negative stereotypes.

Anybody can use the term. Everybody that uses it does so at their own risk. Everybody knows it can be interpreted in a negative manner. You can choose to ignore that fact. It's a free country. You are free to say whatever and society is free to criticize you for it.

and everywhere else but on ATOT would someone agree they were acting like savages

well unless you are a ultra PC person. then i don't give a fuck what you think anyway.

And my point is that people make too big of a damn deal about being offended. If the truth offends you, fix it. Don't avoid the truth. Fix what offends you.

To be honest man...almost everyone I knew was proud to be where we were from. It made us who we were. There was no shame in being from the ghetto. It was about pride, not shame.

If everyone agrees then it doesn't need to be said, now does it? Further proving the point that people that ARE saying it are doing so simply because they want to and they know they can get away with it.

Of course you are proud of it, as you should be, but saying "fix what offends you" isn't always applicable.

Whether or not it is isn't the point. The point is that every full blown racist will make it a point to call black people savages every fucking chance he/she gets. That's how posters here get reps as being racists. It's not because they called a black person a savage, it's because they make sure to call them a savage every chance they get. They aren't fooling anyone.

I got banned for mentioning the fact that other people use that word. :|

No man no!

I use the word ghetto regularly. I'll do it now: I grew up in the ghetto. I did. Burton Heights in Grand Rapids, MI. Village Manor in Sturgis, MI. Those places are ghetto. They are. Its a fact.

See how using that word isn't offensive?

The word is typically used by people who didn't grow up in the ghetto and expanded to include any undesirable part of town.

And?

Its not a big deal. Its not offensive.

I guess this is another one of those things I will never understand. Stupid brain.

All this thread proves is that dank is a typical pc moron. None of those comments, in the PROPER CONTEXT, are racist. Politically approved victim groups overuse accusations like racism to cow the mindless sheeple. It's nothing more than intimidation and oppression.

Doesn't mean I advocate people going around being insensitive jerks, but some of the BS that gets called out as racist, sexist, etc is pure BS. It's used to divide and intimidate, not to bring people together to work out issues.

Doesn't matter, if you want to avoid racially charged words, you avoid using ghetto. It's that simple. If you don't care, then don't care, but you run the risk of someone misinterpreting what you might have meant to say.

People being willfully ignorant of the fact that a word can mean more than one thing.

There we go!

Relax your sphincter, quit finding things to be upset about and enjoy life for a bit.

I posted a joke on facebook yesterday about girls being distracted by their own cleavage. I tagged over 30 of my friends who are girls. Guess how many of them laughed? Guess how many were offended? All vs none.

Just relax FFS.

If it doesn't offend you, fine. If you don't mean anything harmful by it, fine. If you don't care, fine. But to other people it's used in a way that's intended differently.

It's like if a guy tells you he's gay and you assume that means he's happy and gleeful.

It doesn't dilute anything, it teaches us to use better communication. There are better ways to say most of the things on that list that aren't as ambiguous. What you call walking on eggshells I call saying what you really mean. There is enough hate in the world without compounding it with easily avoidable misunderstandings.

It does dilute true racism and this is why people get all bent out of shape by terms like ghetto, savage etc... This is a classic example of "boy who cried wolf" where the word "racism" gets screamed out so often that people begin to dismiss it. True examples of racism are the only examples that deserve the racism designation, not the use of words like ghetto & savage. They are ambiguous only to race-baiters; those who seek to make a gain out of creating a racial issue where none exists. Those of us who are wiser and know the true meaning of the word see no ambiguity and have no guilt using it in a non-offensive scenario. We feel like we are walking on eggshells because we have people that are offended by innocuous terms with no historical racial connotation and are creating a problem where none exist.

So effing what, so they're offended, big whoop. Why is being offended by words (especially done so unintentionally) seen as such a travesty? Is it MY fault you are overly sensitive to a select few words that aren't inherently offensive?

Zero racist comments. And anyone who thinks otherwise needs reading comprehension classes.

How you claim to use it doesn't change the FACT that many use it as a substitute for the n-word.

Like thug is too, right? So every time we observe and identify a psychopathic behavior that takes place with a much higher frequency in the inner city, and assign it a word, that means racism?

So observing reality is basically a racist activity? A THING IS WHAT IT IS. No matter what anyone "feels."

Some of the comments are stereotypical and some are insensitive, but on their face they aren't racist. It is important not to overstate claims to avoid devaluing a word. For example, a waitress who has her butt pinched has a right to complain, but not that she was raped.

Similarly, a student hearing many of these statements could complain they were inappropriate for a teacher to say, but not that the teacher is racist.
