How many people still use Netscape at all?

I stopped using it when I got Win98SE where IE wouldn't lock up my stupid IBM computer I had back then......I won't even install Netscape now because it like to take over file associations and the like.....grrrrr I hate it.

and I DO NOT FEEL SORRY FOR THE POOR JERKS AT NETSCAPE!. they've made a crappy product, end of story.

oh, and Harvey: go **** yourself and come up with some reasons for this incredibly childish hatred to MS. We all owe them great thanks for founding the popular software industry, for making a great OS in DOS and Windows and I just hate people like you who hate MS plain and simple, and won't give some decent reasons for it :|

jonnyGURU: excactly what is so bad about Outlook? It's incredibly fast, has MANY more options than Messenger (like automatic mail check, ability to use seperate username on newsgroups, lots of more signature options, different accounts managing, etc.), and I just think Messenger is a load of crap in comparision.

I have to agree with jonnyGURU. While IE is faster I still prefer Navigator and Messenger.

Outlook Express is lame IMHO. It's too bad that Netscape hasn't kept up release 6 was a joke, but I'm fine running 4.7.

I prefer IE over netscape any day, although I have resorted back to netscape at home because my IE is acting up during forms. It's taking forever to TAB to the next entry. Anyone else getting that problem?

I also test out the html codes for netscape users. And I use netscape when I buy stuff online. It's more secure than IE.

Sorry Prodigy^. I like to think that you and I are buds 😉 but I've got to disagree with you on your statement that "Outlook is faster, better, whatever vs. Messenger.

At home I use Messenger. At work I used to use both Messenger for external and Outlook for internal mail (becuase of out MS based internal mail server).

The j/a's in IT decided to change mail servers and Netscape no longer worked for my external mail.

At this point I was forced to use Outlook for both internal AND external mail and I can say FROM EXPERIENCE that it really does blow chunks in comparison. It is slower. It's clumsier (why shouldn't I be able to right click on a message for my REPLY, FORWARD, etc. functions?) and it just all and all bites as an email reader and don't even get me started on how it functions as a news reader.

Just my $.02 worth... that's all! 🙂

BTW: Last night I installed Lite98 III from http://www.98lite.net and now my machine SMOKES and Netscape has never been better. All I did was REMOVE browser integration from my windows.

Sweet! 😀

The main reason I use internet exploder more than nutscrape is that I can make the toolbar smaller on IE and the backspace key takes me back to the previous page.Other than that they both have their flaws.I have never had nutscrape crash but IE will crash when it is about the only program running(I have a few tsr's going all the time).

As far as outlook or messenger for viewing news groups I think that is just asking for trouble.The best program for that is Agent which you can get from http://www.forteinc.com I am using the free version which I have not updated in a few years and it still runs circles around any other program I have seen.

After IE4 came out, I switched from Netscape Gold 3.0 to IE. Much better interface than Netscape. At the time, Netscape was the back up browser.

Harvey, just get a Mac. I have limited experience with them but people that use them seem happy enough. The one I used had a one button mouse. It used to make me want to sic a cat on it at times though. 😉

I use IE5 90% of the time....the other 10% is when IE just can't seem to load up a page properly, so I switch to Netscape.

jonny- you took the words right out of my mouth, to use a real-world expression. I just love it when someone writes code that either doesn't display right or crashes netscape. Im sure that people that use other browsers like opera love it too. As far as Outlook is concerned, 2 words LOVE BUG

I prefer Outlook Express over Netscape anyday.
More features, like multiple accounts, "user profiles" within the mail app, the message filtering, ease-of-use, and clean interface

sov05: Composer has multiple accounts, "user profiles" within the mail app, the message filtering. I don't know what makes ou think it doesn't. As far as ease-of-use, and clean interface, that is a matter of opinion or a matter of "what you are used to". Like I said; I use Outlook at work and I find a good deal of "shortcuts" are missing.

I used to use Nutscrape, but then I wanted to try out IE 4 cause it was already on my computer, so I used it every so often but still used Netscape as my primary browser.

Netscape stayed my primary browser simply because I was used to the 'feel' of it. IE was almost akward to use. After a while, I began to notice how well IE worked with my system. It opened much quicker and there were cool features that Netscape didn't have. Then IE 5 was released, and it instantly became my favorite.

IE 5 is perfectly integrated with Win9x and 2k. I love it!!!

I have Netscape 4.73 installed on my computer because some of my retarted friends still insist its awesome. (but as I said... they are retarded)

yakko, In Netscape you can use the ALT-arrow key to move forward and backward.

RSI, How can IE be integrated into the OS when it is available for operateing systems other than Microsoft Windows.

To everyone who says they use Netscape only to check webpages. I would suggest that you use http://validator.w3.org/ to validate your pages. This way it will work with any standards compliant browser.

I use NS 4.73. Why? Well, if Netscape crashes, you just fire it up again and go. If IE crashes, so does Explorer, which leaves you with nothing less than a reboot to get Windows to work again. This is my experience anyway.

I personally use IE5 and Outlook.

To me, the MS products seem more intuitive to use and faster than their Netscape counterparts. Then again, some people like having their penis peirced. Just goes to show that neither one is better, it is all subjective.

Red -- Don't know about Mandrake (should that be Persondrake? 😉 ). I'm in no hurry to try Win 2K. I don't want to guess which of my applications won't run on it. It's taken me far too long to get 98 SE to a point where I know how to keep it running. RegClean twice a day and a new install every few months seems to keep it fairly stable. I don't trust any MS release of any product for at least a year and five patches... Ooops! I mean service packs. :Q

Prodigy^ -- <<go **** yourself and come up with some reasons for this incredibly childish hatred to MS. Excuse me while I gag, but your ignorance is only surpassed by your stupidity. The only "great" OS versions they ever released were the second version of DOS 3.3 (Yes, there were two incompatible versions with that number), which was reasonably stabile after too long a wait) and DOS 6.22, which was essentially DOS 3.3 with almost everything working that they managed to steal from earlier versions of DR-DOS.

Micro$loth is the Borg of the software industry. If their products were so great, they could compete on performance, instead of thier documented unethical, preditory behavior. I'm not saying that others haven't engaged in similar actions, but that doesn't excuse their deplorable ethical history.

Telling me to fsck myself isn't going to change that. It just proves that you are a moron who can't think of anything other than personal attacks on people who disagree with you. For that, you are welcome to fsck yourself. While you're at it, piss up a rope, assbreath! :|

Harvey, Mandrake 7.1 is great! I strongly recommend it.

As for getting Windows to run smooth, I would go as extreme as your methods. What I've found works is a nice clean install of 98 SE and then install http://www.98lite.net and clean things up a bit!

I've got it running at home and work and it RU13Z 1337 H4X0RZ is does!

😛 😛 😛

Harvey, your theory about Microsoft and the Borg reminds me of this oldie:

STAR TREK: Gates of Doom (A Lost Episode)

<Picard> "Mr. LaForge, have you had any success with your attempts at finding a weakness in the Borg? And Mr. Data, have you been able to access their command pathways?"

<Geordi> "Yes, Captain. In fact, we found the answer by searching through our archives on late Twentieth-century computing technology."

<Geordi presses a key, and a logo appears on the computer screen.>

<Riker looks puzzled.> "What the hell is 'Microsoft'?"

<Data turns to answer.> "Allow me to explain. We will send this program, for some reason called 'Windows', through the Borg command pathways. Once inside their root command unit, it will begin consuming their system resources at an unstoppable rate."

<Picard> "But the Borg have the ability to adapt. Won't they alter their processing systems to increase their storage capacity?"

<Data> "Yes, Captain. But when 'Windows' detects this, it creates a new version of itself known as an 'upgrade'. The use of resources increases exponentially with each iteration. The Borg will not be able to adapt quickly enough. Eventually all of their processing ability will be taken over, and none will be available for their normal operational functions."

<Picard> "Excellent work. This is even better than that 'unsolvable geometric shape' idea."

~~~ 15 Minutes Later ~~~
<Data> "Captain, We have successfully installed the 'Windows' in the command unit. As we anticipated, it immediately consumed 85% of all resources. However, we have not received any confirmation of the expected 'upgrade'."
<Geordi> "Our scanners have picked up an increase in Borg storage and CPU capacity to compensate, but we still have no indication of an 'upgrade' to compensate for their increase."
<Picard> "Data, scan the history banks again to see if there is something we have missed."
<Data> "Sir, I believe I see the reason for the failure in the 'upgrade'. Apparently the Borg have circumvented that part of the plan by not sending in their registration cards."
<Riker> "Captain, we have no choice. Requesting permission to begin emergency escape sequence 3F ..."
<Geordi, excited> "Wait! Captain, I just detected a change! The Borg CPU capacity has suddenly dropped to 0%!"
<Picard> "Data, what do your scanners show?"
<Data> "Appearently the Borg have found the internal 'Windows' module named 'Solitaire', and it has used up all the CPU capacity."
<Picard> "Let's wait and see how long this 'Solitaire' can reduce their functionality."
~~~ Two Hours Pass ~~~

<Riker> "Geordi, what is the status on the Borg?"

<Geordi> "As expected, the Borg are attempting to re-engineer to compensate for increased CPU and storage demands, but each time they successfully increase resources, I have set up our closest deep space monitor beacon to transmit more 'Windows' modules from something called the 'Microsoft Fun-Pack'."

<Picard> "How much time will that buy us?"

<Data> "Current Borg solution rates allow me to predicate an interest time span of 6 more hours."

<Geordi> "Captain, another vessel has entered our sector."

<Picard> "Identify."

<Data> "It appears to have markings very similar to the 'Microsoft' logo."

<A nasal male voice comes through the speakers> "THIS IS ADMIRAL BILL GATES OF THE MICROSOFT FLAGSHIP 'MONOPOLY.' WE HAVE POSITIVE CONFIRMATION OF UNREGISTERED SOFTWARE IN THIS SECTOR. SURRENDER ALL ASSETS, AND WE CAN AVOID ANY TROUBLE. YOU HAVE 10 SECONDS."

<Data> "The alien ship has just opened its forward hatches and released thousands of humanoid-shaped objects!"

<Picard> "Magnify forward viewer on the alien craft."

<Riker> "Good God, Captain! Those humans are floating straight toward the Borg ship with no life support suits! How can they survive the tortures of deep space?!"

<Data> "I don't believe that those are humans, sir. If you will take a closer look, I believe you will note that they are carrying items recognized by twenty-first century man as doe-skin leather briefcases, and their uniforms are Armani suits."

<Riker and Picard together, horrified> "Lawyers!!!"

<Geordi> "It can't be. All the Lawyers were rounded up and sent hurtling into the sun in 2017 during the Great Awakening."

<Data> "True, but appearently some must have survived."

<Riker> "They have surrounded the Borg ship, and are covering it with all types of papers."

<Data> "I believe that is known in ancient vernacular as 'red tape.' It is invariably fatal."

<Riker> "They're tearing the Borg to pieces!"

<Picard> "Turn off the monitors. I can't stand to watch. Not even
the Borg deserve that."

As a ST fan, that was priceless WW, you forgot the part where the Delta Quadrant offered them sanctuary. 😉
