not how many own a manual, but what % of licensed drivers know how to operate one?

This thread needs more pole. I don't really know how to drive one, although a buddy tried to teach me on his jeep. Eventually I got it into 2nd gear, though!

The best way to learn is to learn like I did. Have your car have a stick and a clutch and be forced to drive it until you love it.

Own/Drive, FL. Learned when I was 14-15. First car was a manual, as well as the one I took my driving test in.

My first new car, 05 mini cooper, was a stick and I did not know how to drive it off the lot. Mom had to help me get it home, but I took it from there.

my 1st decent car was a vw that was manual.
the dealer test drove it for me.lol
so when i got home it was either learn it or pound sand.
ive owned alot of manuals, more by coincidence than preference(buy used.)

Why would other parts of the world be less than Europe?

I'm guessing that 95% of the non-US and Canada world knows how to drive manual...if you know how to drive, you learned on a manual. If anything, Europe would be lower, since they have newer cars with modern SMG/manumatic/etc. transmissions.

Probably most drivers over 40 know how to drive a manual transmission, and most drivers under 30 do not.

first car was manual

i think everyone's first car should be a manual. if you try to learn how to drive a manual transmission and fail so badly you cannot operate it at all then it seems to me that you might not be ready to endanger other peoples lives on the road by operating any vehicle.

Since I fired my gf I have zero friends capable of driving an MT car.

I would say that 20% of people between the ages of 16 and 50 can operate a MT vehicle, but maybe only 1% can do it well.

I learned on a big old pickup.

That was around 12 years ago or so and I am sure I am rusty since I have not used them since.

That thing was annoying to drive since the light switch for brights and dim and on the floor so sometimes you needed 3 feet but it also had 2 gas tanks so it was fun freaking out people when they think you were going to run out of gas. :D

Learned to drive manual when I got my license. My older brother owned one and put me behind the wheel and told me I was going to learn. :)

Currently own and drive a manual transmission car.

Oh yea, I almost forgot.. my mom once tried to teach me to drive a manual at age 12, but the first time i went into first and lifted off the clutch too fast causing the wheels to chirp, which scared me literally out of the car.. I just jumped out and ran.. didnt turn the car off or engage the brake or anything. Moms says at least I didn't panic and slam my foot on the gas pedal or anything EXTRA stupid.. just slightly stupid.

Dunno percentage wise but I do. Another reason why I appreciate the electronic manual shifting in the LS V8 :)
