I played UO from release until EQ released in March 1999. I have been playing EQ since then and also dabble a bit with DAoC. I really like DAoC but all my friends never got into it and it gets kind of boring soloing it all the time. I will definitely try Horizons when it releases.

I probably wont ever play a MMORPG again.

I played everquest for about 1-1.5 years. During college.. bad idea :) Sold my level 65 paladin loaded for some good scratch, but I think addicting is a good way to describe that game. Thousands and thousands of people to meet, make friends with, and hang out with. Even if your popular and have a social life, it was fun to jump on at any hour and have a handful of friends to talk to, and fight with. My friend got me started, and then I passed him up. Then he mostly caught up with me.

I never put that game ahead of my gf, so thankfully my relationship never suffered, but school took a hit one semester from it :)

Live and learn I guess.

PS Anyone ever have a high level char on Ayonae Ro? ;)

I can't stand MMORPG's.
They are games without end, without goals. They quickly become boring and repetitive.
The 'progress' obtained amounts to nothing more than updating a database on a server.
Most of them are more or less IRC with graphics.

How do you get addicted to an online game?

I never done an online rpg, just online rts and fps.. so what does an addiction consist of?

My attention span is about 3 weeks.. I doubt I'd want to bother/play a game that requires as much effort as you all put into online rpgs.

I think I'd rather go outside or to a friends house then sit around paying to play a game in which I need to dedicate myself to.

Kinda stupid if you ask me.. I think Div on penny arcade said it best ..

"I just want to take a moment and talk to all the retards. So you spend your real money in order to get pretend money in your online games. Then, for the privilege of spending that pretend money - in a pretend world, on pretend things - you pay more money every month. What a bunch of - bain surgeons"

The so called "addiction" is nothing more than a lack of self discipline IMHO.

I played Asheron's Call beta the last day it was a beta. I had @Home software then and then had a gaming section and I downloaded it (from @Home servers at like 1 megabyte / second...back when I had 10000 down / 1000 up cable) and ever since that day... I bought the retail version of AC when it came out and the next 3 years of high school were consumed by AC. I still played sports, got drunk with my buddies, etc... but it was a major theme of my life. Like Skoorb, I am almost ashamed of being a addicted to a game like that, and I don't want to fall down that hole again... I have a fiancee, priorities with family, friends, etc.

Oh yea, the things I mentioned are what makes those games unenjoyable.
Its exactly like diablo, I can play it for a while and it holds my attention... but after I realize the games will never be anything more than something a script could do, I lose interest. I'd rather play minesweeper than diablo.

Been playing DAOC for about 2 years now. I beta tested SWG and I didnt like it. I've tried a few others beside DAOC, but I keep going back to it. Maybe its because I know a lot of people on it and have a bunch of friends that play also.

It's kind of like what the guy said up there... think of a cold winter day, a warm mug of hot chocolate, and playing Asheron's call with your friends. I quit over 2 years ago and that still sounds appealing to me... Asheron is still calling me! lol.... It is partly/mostly self discipline. I went to school...had wrestling practice, then came home and played AC. On Friday and Saturday night I would go out and do whatever...but during the day on saturday and all day sunday was AC. No girlfriend... just hooking up with girls on friday/sat night. Then college/work/fiancee all hit about the same time and I had to do cold turkey.

I played Asheron's Call for about 2 years, and DAOC for about 6 months then I had other priorities so I quit . MMPOGs are HUGE time sinks, and I can't justify the time it takes to play one of these anymore (have a family now). AC was a blast to play, but you better be single or have good self control. :)

I agree, they're FAR too time-consuming, anf if you're not single when you start pleying them then you will soon be, lol. :)

Played EQ on a 56K modem for a year and was addicted but with a baby on the way had to go cold turkey.

Started playing SWG but haven't really been able to get into it. People don't seem as friendly as EQ. I have not once been able to group with anyone. I'll probably not renew when my subscription is over in a month or two.

I never understood the addiction with UO, as I played it a ton and never really got addicted. But EQ was different. Heres why EQ gets addictive for those wondering:

You'd play when you are bored like say around 6pm. Now you want to get a good group so you can get a decent level. By 7pm you are in some crappy group doing stinky. All of a sudden around 8pm you get the best group in the world and now you don't want to leave it because it took you so long to get into it. So the next thing you know it is 4am and you are falling asleep at the keyboard.

And then theres times where its like. Ok we want to get 30 people to go to the plane of hate. So you plan to start the thing at 6pm. But like all events, it gets delayed. So your chilling at the port in area for 2 hours waiting for everyone to arrive. You get into the plane at 8pm and then you clear almost the whole zone by 1am. At 1:15am your entire camp whipes out and then you are doing a CR for the next 2-3 hours.

These are the things that cause you to spend more time than you had planned. I don't play it anymore...

I'm into EQ pretty deep. No, I don't need your help, pity, or support. Level 65 druid, 143 AA. Also got a few other characters that are approaching 60.

I'm trying to figure out why people are looking down on people for being committed or heavily involved with something in life. "Man, you got that family thing? What a time commitment! I feel so sorry for you..." or "Man, you work 40 hours a week doing something you don't like so that you can pay off your college debt that you got spending 4 years learning stuff you didn't like and don't use anymore anyway? What a waste..." I guess it's just easy to be critical. EQ is an outlet; guess you can think of it like watching football games or being in a bowling league. When all is said and done, no, you haven't accomplished anything by any worldly standards, but if your standards are different because you're a thinking human being, then why should that bother you?

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. EQ is far cheaper than a girlfriend though, I'll give it that. Find me a girlfriend who costs me less than 10 bucks a month and maybe I'll quit. I'd prefer to find one who plays EQ though...

That was tongue-in-cheek, by the way.

I'll tell you why UO was one of my favorite games of all time. It truly was an RPG. You had characters that you felt a connection to, people that you met and socialized with, people that you hated, people that you trusted. The game was only 30% of it, the socializing was 70% of it. In D1/D2/D2x (which I've put way too many hours into also), you never just chilled around town and talked to people. It was a completely dynamic environment.

Back before UO got pussified, it was great. You were always in danger so the game always had the "edge". Even if you were just in town, you had the risk of crap being stolen from you, or a huge guildwar blowing up right in front of your very eyes. The point of the game was/is the very same point in life: to better your current situation. You always strived for that extra .1 in a skill just to call yourself a GM. You wanted to kill that extra monster just for the chance of getting that killer weapon. You were willing to spend obscene amounts of time doing absurd repetitive tasks so you could afford that house.

Unlike any other game, you felt as if there was a return for your time spent. You felt a connection to all your posessions/clanmates/characters. How could you say that about any other game? Take CS for example, just because you run into the same people every once in a while doesn't mean jack. In UO, if you ran into another person, and kept doing it repeatedly, you'd probably either a. kill him or b. put him into your list of connections.

UO was/is the greatest MMORPG ever created, and as much as I hate to think about all the hours I wasted in that game, it was fun as hell while it lasted.

You are comparing the time drain of having a family to playing a video game. Seek help.

Played AC1 for a very long time, quit when AC2 came out. Quit AC2 last month. There's going to be a superhero MMORPG? Sound pretty cool. I heard there was going to be a gladiator based MMORPG. I think I might wait for The Lord of the Rings MMORPG, Middle Earth Online. Middle Earth Online

A few of my friends were into AC and they want me to stop playing wc3 and play wow when it comes out. I don't ever see myself getting into one of these because 1. It seems like there's no ultimate goal...and no way of being the best or beating a whole bunch of people if you're clever or just better than them. 2. You have to put in so much time to get good that if you don't have 12 hours a day to spend building your character you're never going to do very well...so it's just a game of who has the most time not really skill. 3. No satisfaction of winning or beating another person...I think one of the main reasons why I play games online is that I'm usually a lot better than the average person and can rack up 20 wins in a row and completely own someone...it doesn't seem like killing computer opponents is all that satisfying..

It looks promising.
