I have had 4 down without any novacaine...The best part of it was when his drill hit my roots, Felt like I was chewing tinfoil and simutaneously getting zapped by a tazor gun.

I would recommend it to anyone ;)

The dentist wanted to inject anesthetics, but I didn't want it, so he tried to do it without. Let me say this- it didn't hurt a bit! It was a pretty big cavity, probably there for like 10 months. I'm very impressed with my dentist :). Basically, he first used this vacuum to get rid of food in the cavity, then he used filling and put it in there with a pick. They did it a lot of times, a team of 2. After the filling, they would use UV light to harden the filling. They would repeat the filling and hardening like 5 times. In 1 hour, they did 2 teeth! Very happy with it, it's possible.

Psssh, f that. They've always given me a shot(s) of local anesthetic when doing fillings and such. I've had my four wisdom teeth out too, with the local. I've never had the gas or been put under.

Ahh. No. That's not a filling. Yes, technically it is but it's not. I have two of these.
When I was a child, my parents would not pay for novocaine. It was not covered by their insurance. And my dad had his done in 1940 Germany without it. So Suck It Up, he said. It was very painful. When I was in my 20's and had my first real job, I went to the dentist. He could tell novocaine wasn't used. The old dentist didn't drill enough and now they all had to be redone. 30 years later, my redo's are still doing great. Dentists don't like a screaming kid in their chair.

I had all four wisdom teeth taken out at one time. I was completely under.

Screw that. Even with freezing sometimes I can feel it "sting" once in a while if they hit a certain part. Supposedly us gingers are much more sensitive to tooth pain though, probably why I hate getting dental work done.

I've had fillings polished/modified without freezing but they were not touching the actual tooth.

I hated shots so much as a kid that I gave up and went without. I don't do that anymore unless the cavity is shallow.

Same...eff that. Also, same as a kid, dentist said suck it up. If he wasn't dead, I'd kick his fat ass. Why would you do that to a child? At 55, I'm just now comfortable at my current dentist. She knows what she's doing and has never hurt me. Helps that she's pretty hot.

There's no way you can do it without anesthetic if they're getting near a nerve. Tooth nerves are some of the most sensitive in the body and friction from a dentist drill can heat the drilled area up to 300F.

What sucks is when they overdo they numbing. My dentist injects a tiny needle all over, then when that takes effect he brings out a giant horse tranquilizer needle. I end up looking like I had a stroke for 6 hours after

Fillings should not cause any major pain. Now a root canal will as you are hitting the root.

Had a few incidents where they did not freeze enough so they always do mine really good. But yeah it takes forever to go after. Better than the alternative though. The interesting thing about those needles is you don't even feel them going in. I forget why, I had asked about that since I was curious. Think it's because there is always a bit of gel at the tip so it freezes the area it's going into and they also go slowly.

I am just wondering because I had a second experience when dental professionals were just floored that I have never received anesthetic of any sort for my eight fillings (all when I was under 12). I am about to have my wisdom teeth yanked, and I had to tell the dentist that I had never had anesthesia of any sort (never had any surgeries before). The guy who was filling out some preliminary paperwork just couldn't believe that my teeth had been drilled without gas or anything like that.

Anyone else out there have an apparently hardcore dentist growing up?

That's just ridiculous.

I don't remember ever having had my teeth drilled without anesthesia. My dad was an anesthesiologist. I'm no masochist. I also have never pulled the legs off bugs.

My dentist always says "there'll be a little pinch." Yeah, that hurts for a second but I don't murmur or start.

He sometimes says if I still feel pain he can inject some more and IIRC we've done that a couple of times.

I really like my dentist. I don't fear him, am never afraid to have a dental appointment. Anesthesia has a lot to do with that. IIRC, I have never been put under for dental work. That includes one root canal and having all wisdom teeth removed. Those weren't done by my dentist, though. He referred me to other professionals for that work. Again, anesthesia! It's one of the greatest things ever in the health arena. Unless you have a good reason to avoid it, don't!

Lidocaine doesn't work on me, but whatever my new place uses works great. Had my first crown put in this winter. Previous trips to the dentist had always been unpleasant, pretty much the main reason I've always taken oral health very seriously. Did a preemptive wisdom extraction (all four) back in college once I started having an issue with one. That was a gas/IV situation. Gas didn't work, and they had to goose the drip to put me under. There was no trailing off, more of a light switch effect. I woke up a couple hours later to a nurse playing with my hair.
