Ok, who voted 11-29 and didn't tell their story....wtf?</end quote></div>

That was me...I did tell it. Not really...but I said part of it.</end quote></div>

I missed your post. Tell the story?

It's not really that exciting.

I had an aircraft departing RWY08 with a wind of 120 @ 10 knots. There was a thunderstorm passing by about 10 miles north of the airport, but it wasn't affecting us.

As the aircraft began the takeoff roll, we were hit by a micro burst and the wind INSTANTLY changed to 300 @ 55 knots. It wasn't even raining prior to the wind slamming into us.

Now for those of us that aren't pilots, which includes me, the long story short is it went from a slight cross wind to a nearly direct tail wind. This particular Beech 1900 was fully loaded and was able to handle a maximum of 10 knot tail wind. Anything more and it becomes unsafe...never mind 5x more.

I got on the radio and started shouting instantly to the pilot. If it had been 5 seconds later, the pilot said they would have likely crashed off the end of the runway.

It's really not a big deal on my part, I think anyone in my position would have done the same. That said, if there was no ATC unit here, he would have crashed as no one would have been watching over him.

I called the police on a very drunk driver, and followed her while on the phone with them until they arrived to arrest her. It's possible she could have killed someone. She was facked up like you wouldn't believe, all over both sides of the road and often off to one side of it or the other. But I'll vote 0 becaue there's never been a situation where I've tangibly done it or had the opportunity to.

One. I stopped by my parents house after work a number of years back, while my dad was experiencing an abdominal aortic aneurysm. I showed up just in time to quickly assess the situation and call 911. It was a very near thing, but he survived and made a full recovery.

i'm an er physician, so honestly, probably at least forty to fifty from certain death in the brief time i've been practicing. unfortunately i've also lost many. not sure if it counts, because if i wasn't there, someone else i'm sure would have done the same thing in my stead.

Without a doubt they count. I can't imagine working that job. Hope you make lots of $$$, you deserve it.

1 for me.

I pulled my sister, who was 6 months old at the time, off the bottom of the lake after she rolled off the dock.

My mom and youngest sister had been laying on the dock while the rest of us (dad, 2 other sisters) were in the water. She got distracted briefly by one of my other sisters and the youngest just rolled over and fell off the dock.

I can rememer looking down into the water and seeing her staring up at me... seemed like a long time, but was really only seconds.

She (my youngest sister) does't remember it... but I'll never forget the image of her laying on the bottom like nothing was wrong, just staring up at me.

The funny thing was... before that she wanted nothing to do with the water.... after that she was no longer afraid of it.

I've saved 1. Not to long ago. We were on vacation and while at the pool one of my GF's cousins (4 or 5) slipped into the pool. No one noticed until her mom started screaming for her and the mom was in shock and standing there yelling for her kid. I was sitting at a table in regular clothes, denim shorts, t-shirt, flip flops, wallet in pocket, talking on the phone. When i heard the mom yelling I looked around and saw the kid at the botom of the pool trying to get her head above water, so I dropped my phone and jumped in and pulled her up.

Just one, I was surfing in the Lake Michigan and some punk Jet Skier crashed his jetski in the rocks and forgot how to swim.... It was at Michigan City Pier.

Don't know, I work on medical equipment but don't go out in the field much.

...oh, and on a long enough timeline, the survival rate drops to 0.

For which, I thank you.

actually, if it wasn't for me, the Earth would have been destroyed, so would all the people born after 1995 count as well? if so, my number keeps rising.

Myself, quite a few. ( ~40 patients a week for 6 years... I figure I've seen about 12K patients in my career.) I count the saves as "would they die if I didn't fix/do something". Those that need something I can give or do right then and there, or they will die. That ends up being things like choking, arrests, bleeding out, heroin OD's, anaphylactic shock, diabetic hypoglycemia, acute asthma, etc.

The others that may have died I just prolonged their chances for the ER docs, like the one above. Medics do get to save people, but most of the time we are the ones that give them a chance for survival by getting them stabalized and to definitive care. (ER docs, surgeons, etc.)

Still rewarding though, pay sucks so you have to love it.

 goes out to you paramedics.

You often do way more to save people than I ever can do as an ER nurse.

Your way of looking at it is nice too, paramedics, nurses, docs we all are a link in a chain to saving a life.

 to the paramedics and ER folks...you do great work...(even when the ER is full of people too dumb to go to a regular doctor for a cold)

IMO, there's no one finer than the Corpsmen who patch up our soldiers in the field. They do their paramedic/doctor work usually under enemy fire, and should be credited for saving (collectively) thousands and thousands of lives. to them all
