how can they selectively pick 2 people, isn't there a law that requires everyone to be tested if that's the direction they want to go? If I were one of the two, I would raise heck....:D

lol - EXACTLY! :p

On the other hand, our pizzas wouldn't arrive with a missing slices either.

I would pass a company drug test, but isn't it funny that a pharmaceutical company is doing it? I guess they figure if you haven't found an undetectable drug among the thousands that they make, you don't deserve to work there.

I think that we are all agreed that a company should have the right to determine if, a given employee is intoxicated on the job. This is triple underlined for those employees who operate machinery or otherwise have safety concerns in their job.

The thing is, why are companies spending so many resources trying to determine what their employees do on the weekend. It's not just that I think it is invasive and unfair (which I do), but I question the economic efficiency of the proccess.

If a person is burnt out from the weekend before, their performance is going to suffer. If their performance suffers, one can easily dicipline them on that point.

If a person indulges moderately, and is not burnt out, their performance will not suffer. If their performance does not suffer, then the resources spent testing them, and subsequently firing them (as well as the previous resources spent hiring and training them) are completely wasted.

I really don't see what these companies hope to accomplish.

I just enjoy watching the druggies get pwned.

Open minded much?

here is a scenario I'd like you pro testers to comment on....

You work for xyz corp you get your 2 weeks vaca per year. you are a top employee performance wise. On your two week vaca you travel to holland. while in holland you indulge in some space cake and a joint........all legal. You return to the states and on your first day back you are asked to pee in a cup. They find prescence of THC in your urine and subsequently fire you.

It is there right to do so as the employer.

I'm sure the 3 people that would be left to come in the next day would have a grand old time trying to figure out how things get done.

The irony of all of this is... the power of propaganda really can win people over. We are on these tech forums yet some of the greatest minds in the IT industy including Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were recreational drug users. Jobs describing it as "one of the most important things I have done in my life". I also read somewhere the PC mouse was an invention of a LSD introduced drug trip. Now I do not advocate drug use, at all. To each person his own life I say. But those of you who see nothing but "dumb druggies" are really only looking at half the picture.

I for one wouldn't want my company to have a random test right now. Just got back from a 2-months project in Amsterdam.. :p

I wouldn't be that irresponsible to indulge in drugs that I knew could violate my terms of employment, whether here or abroad.

I used to buy that foul tasting cleansing stuff (god, f'in nasty stuff) and never failed a drug test if I had a few hours to prepare, despite being the biggest head around. I worked part time at Home Depot as a kid, I remember drinking that stuff to pass the test, then going in stoned a few days later :D I work for myself now, but if not I guess I'd take the test since I've moved on from illicit substances to just some occasional booze and a raging caffeine addiction. I don't agree with drug testing, but it beats being homeless. There are more effective and less dangerous ways to fight it; donate to NORML, for example.

The following quote heavily applies, and it's sad to see so many of you falling into the trap.
First They Came for the Jews

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

Alot of the rigs in alberta do drug testing for marijuana. It is written in the contract that if you fail the test you can have your contract terminated. You must pass before you are hired too!

Ok, the employer should be able to do whatever they want. If they don't want people who do drugs at night or over the weekend then that is their perogative.

That being said, I personally think the two don't have anything to do with each other. I think it is a waste of resources and silly to think my actions outside of work would impact my abilities during work. But I guess in this society, the idiocy of a few screw the rights of many.

Unless caffeine has made its way on to the banned substances list, I would be fine.

..nothing new. People in the transportation..law enforcement/fire dept have been operating under zero tolerance rules for 20+years. Drug testing is becoming very cheap and insurance companies are requiring pre-employment/random/post accident testing in the work place. There's a drug test in EVERYBODY's future.
