Yeah.... I was a boy scout too though, so I can do quite a few of the more interesting ones. While it's nothing overly special, but the battery and steel wool is always fun.

The hard part about starting fires is to get the kitten to stay at the focal point.

I would say that the vast majority of people wouldn't know how to start a fire without a lighter or a match.

Many people would be able to figure it out with a flint and steel, but it would probably take a while. The tinder used would be the most important aspect.

I've never lit a fire with a flint and steel, but I think I could do it.

I start fires on most days. We have 2 fireplaces and a woodburning stove. Sometimes I cheat and use the firestarting logs, sometimes I like to pretend I am stranded on a deserted island and just use twigs, woods shaving and leaves.

Starting a fire with a stick is an art. Most people would not be able to do it.

Not because they lack strength or stamina, but because you have to use certain types of wood. Not just any wood will do, and you need different types for the drill and the hearth board. Harder wood for the drill, and softer wood for the hearth board.

Does Swedish fire steel count as flint and steel? Or is that cheating ... hehehe
You probably already know what I'm talking about but linky

I swear, swedish fire steel is even easier than using matches or cheap lighters. It's maybe 1 step below a Zippo (zippo is king because rain/wind won't stop you from starting a fire with one.)

Finally someone who mentions tinder. I think most people here are confusing kindling with tinder.

As for me, yes, I learned and made fires as a kid in a Boy Scouts-like group. Tinder -> kindling -> logs.

You forgot the little notch for the ember to fall through.

No, I don't know how, I'm not the "outdoorsy" type, I refuse to go camping until someone makes a tent with cable.

where the hell have you been? Living under a rock? You can take your directv dish with you, your LCD with you, and they make some generators now that are so quiet, you can barely hear them running. Now, get your butt out into the woods and start a fire like a real man would... so your wife can do the cooking. :p

Eagle scout here, so ya. I even carry steel wool and a 9 volt in both of my trucks, just in case. Using a bow sucks.

A childhood friend of mine used to build huge model ships. Like 8' long, filled with little miniature people and miniature swimming pools, and everything. Then he would sail them on the local lake.

Filled with explosives. Boom! Seriously.

Yep, I was a boy scout. Not one of these wussy modern boy scouts either. We did all that crap they do on survivor, and I was only 15 :D

I've made a fire out of sticks, vine, a rock, sand, and wood chips. I've also used glasses.
