I have a 2500+ rig that is only missing some RAM before it becomes a linux box :)

That's a familar refrain!

"3 out of 5 of my machines" (also) have Athlon XP's (a 2100+, a 3000+, and an {XP-M}2500+).

Same here !!! XP-M 2400+ , Tbred 2400+, and a 1600+. The other 2 rigs are S754 with a 3200+ A64 and a Sempron 3100+ (couldn't pass up the deal at outpost). My Main gaming rig is the XP-M 2400+ @ 2.35gig on an NF7-S 2.0 pushing an X800XT AIW card.

Thanks for the info, Kiwi. I had thought of trying it but was afraid I wouldn't like the results. I'm thinking of getting a 6800gs which is what my son uses and he's able to play at 1280x1024 without problems. Of course, he has a AMD 64 2.0 Ghz.

I've tried various resolutions with the 5900; so far I've gotten a CTD after the intro and the circle around the castle. Up to that point, though, the view is just beautiful. Then, just as the game wants to pass through a door, it also wants to do something else that doesn't work (starting the Character Generator), and I'm back at the Desktop.

FIXED!

(It was the 79.xx drivers I still had running, apparently. I installed the Beta 84.25 set, and it cured the CTD. I did have some trouble with the download. The first got corrupted, the second try failed when my ISP dropped the ball, and finally the third try worked. So far, I don't know what resolution I can get by with in the outdoors, though.)

I used an 1800+ for ages. I even got a 2600+, but my (old Asus) MB wasn't stable with it, so I ran it as 1800+ speed for another long while. But even after installing a new MB and running it at 2600+, I found that I was seriously lagging (not FPS but SPF) during some high-level raids in WoW, upgraded to an Athlon 64, solved my performance problems, and confirmed via benchmarks that the XP was indeed a bottleneck.

My gamer is currently an Athlon XP 3200 Barton. Plenty fast for all the games I play except for FEAR, which probably wont be able to play well until I get more memory or a new rig altogether.

AXP 2800+ at stock speeds cooled by a Alpha 8045 w/ 80mm Sanyo Denki here. Performance is still pretty good so I think I'm going to try to time my upgrade with Windows Vista.

Main (and only) system is an Asus A7V333 with a XP1700+ @ 1.9 ghz. About 3.5 years old now. When I can buy an X2 for <$100, then I'll upgrade (come on Conroe!). I'm surprised I've lasted this long. I only had my previous systems for no more than two years. My Win2k system still works well enough for my Photoshop/RAW conversion needs. Processor speeds have really seemed to tail off from those crazy days when it seemed like every week the processors were increasing clock speed by 10%.

What I really want to upgrade is my crappy Geforce Ti4200. Not because it's underpowerd, but because it's so f@cking loud. Hmm. Maybe I should disable the fan and underclock the GPU.....

see sig...
Oblivion defaulted to "High Quality," running 1280x1024 with no studdering to speak of so far. man i just realized i havn't updated drivers in like months....

i'll be off to college soon, and will leave this rig home and pick up a core duo laptop, but i'm sure it will serve the rest of my family for a good while longer...though maybe not at 1.75vcore...=P

Barton XP 3000
Abit NF-7S
1GB Corsair Value Ram
HIS ATI X700

Avid gamer and this rig does great. I don't abuse it to complain about it, I use the settings needed for smooth operation and live with it. Next upgrade will probably be Q4 2006.

For probably $15 at compusa or frys, he probably can replace the whole heatsink and fan.

Athlon XPs are still quite common here in Brazil. I got an Abit AN7 with a Barton 3000+ and a ATI Radeon 9800Pro. And I won't upgrade until I have the money to buy a processor+mobo+VGA combination that is worth the upgrade, which means that I won't upgrade for a very long time... :( Very satisfied with the rig though, and it's gonna get better after my second 512MB stick of RAM arrives from NewEgg... (it takes 30 days or so, since I'm am in Brasil and I have to import it!).

I am still running an AXP 2500+ @ 3200+. The only thing I've changed in the system is the video card last fall from my old TI4400 to a 6800 and it works really well.

I was at a LAN party last night and we played all the new fps games such as FEAR, COD2, BF2, etc. About two thirds of our group still have older AXP systems while the others have migrated to A64 territory. The thing that I couldn't believe was that one guy has a Radeon 8500 and only 512megs of ram with an AXP 2400+, and he was actually able to play FEAR and COD2 and hold his own.. but BF2 gave him a blue screen with a fatal error so he didn't get past that point. I was amazed at what his older machine could actually play (albeit at much lower res and stuff turned off).
