Sometimes I have to refer to myself as part "Indian" because more people understand that than Native American. When I refer to Indians of India, I rather just say Asian.

There is no such thing as Indian American, African American, etc. You're either American or you're not. I am an American, of Eastern Shawnee descent. Not sure if I would classify "Native American" as invalid - Native American is to African, as Native American American is to African American. Maybe the word needs to be compounded to reduce confusion, like Nativamerican.
