I don't think I am been influence in any way except ATOT has exacerbate my tendencies for sarcasm and cynicism.
I truly believe no matter how beautiful you think your girl may be, there are enough geeks on this forum with so much pent up frustration (ironically, from being virgins or never having a girlfriend) that their comments will start a bandwagon and before you know it you end up with a thread geekbabe posted.
I think it's truly disgusting how ruthless some(most) people on here are, and i'll admit i love making fun of people, but i certainly don't post comments like that every time i post. I think there are some people on ATOT who have devoted their sad little lives to make everyone else miserable.
Rule 1: When everyone asks for pics, don't show them. No pics of girlfriends, sisters, moms, etc if you know whats good for you....You girl will either be up to par for most, and then you'll be flooded with perverted requests in your PM box, or like most of the time, your girl will not be up to playboy model standards and will be ridiculed .. not that it matters too much, but if she ever finds out, it'll prolly make her cry then she'll kick your ass for posting her pic.

In answer to OP: Not I. I could care less about what others think about my woman, I think she's hot...and thats all that matters to me. By the same token, I could care less what kind of girl others find attractive. That said, I have no intention of posting pics of her...because honestly what good could possibly come of it? Either she's wank material for a bunch of 14 year olds, or they bash her. Neither one of these scenarios seems to offer me anything positive. Plus, I don't need a poll of other peoples opinions to decide what I personally feel. I only gotta poll one asshole for the answer to that question.

If the guys here have such super-high standards in terms of what constitutes an "attractive" woman... does that mean they are never going to find a woman who meets those standards (and who is interested in them!!) and therefore they spend their life alone?
I thought the responses to ifesor's thread were pretty despicable, I have to say.
It's not just this place, it's the entire culture... we are bombarded with images of extremely attractive people all day long (tv, billboards, magazines). Not sure what long term effect that is going to have on people.

This is why you should either a) Never post a pic of your SO on anandtech or b) only do it if she's really hot or c) (best answer) ignore the comments of virginal zit-scarred geeks who fist off to alba all day. Whenever somebody posts a pic of an unattractive SO I simply resist commenting on her, so I defy anybody to find a negative post in regards to someone's SO posted on AT
Yeah that thread is pretty slack..glad I didn't post and be lowered to the status of pond scum like the rest who gave their unwanted opinon in that thread...any way she didn't look that bad to me, I've seen a lot worse.

not i. my wife is teh hotness which is exactly why i would never post pics of her here. people that post pics are kinda cr@zAy in my opinion.
The threads over the last few days has simply confirmed my theory of what the ATOT phenomenon really is "schadenfreude". Alot of the people here rely on ATOT to feel good about themselves. It's kinda sad really.

That's very true. I know what your point is, but I don't think it's as big a problem as you think... or maybe it's a bigger problem than I think.
I know for me, when someone posts a picture of someone and asks for opinions, it's understood that they're referring to their physical appearance. As you pointed out, there's much more to a person than their physical appearance, but that's all that can be commented on by seeing a picture of the person, so that's the only responses that should be expected. If someone here uses people's opinion on a person's physical appearance as a means of judging character then they're just stupid. I'm attracted to certain types of women with no consideration to their appearance. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying being physically attracted to someone isn't important because it is... maybe in some people's eyes that makes me shallow, but whatever. I don't limit myself to 5'9" blondes with the perfect hourglass figure is what I mean. In the threads in question, I found it hilarious that the OP was so interested in getting the approval of ATOT. So interested that he posted multiple pictures in an attempt to get people here to see her the way he see's her. If he just wanted to post a picture and share his joy with us fine, but obviously he wasn't satisfied with that. He seemed to be seeking approval, which is weird IMHO.

add on to that the normal number of babe threads, lindsay lohan threads, "rate this chick", "female or shemale" threads and whatever and this place has been testostorone city for the past while. I'm not sure if its because spring is here or someone started a precident and now people feel like they can say these things all over the place, but its coming out in every thread and its really sickening and disgusting.
I think if that guy had posted that picture at a different time the response wouldn't have been so harsh but I really don't know what is happening to this place.. I mean, it was always kind of rough but never like this.

Nobody on this forum actually believes in the impossibly high standards they pretend to adhere to in their posts. It's just a thing guys do online to buff their egos up a little and crack some jokes. Guys insult every facet of one another and that includes significant others. Deal with it, or, to be frank, look into not hanging around a place where the population is in the vast majority male.
Generally I think it's very amusing. You do yourself a disservice by taking it seriously.
