Yay! I don't feel so weird now. I live alone and I have 7 computers. 3 in my bedroom, 2 downstairs and 2 in my "study/office" room.

The computers in my bedroom are mainly for gaming. The computers in my office will be my programming/development machines and my downstair computers will be my 24/7 fileserver and Linux machines. All my computers can play DVDs....
 
Lets see.

My AMD desktop, her AMD desktop, 1 Dual AMD server, 1 Dual PII server, 1 PIII-500 Linux box, 1 Cyrix SUS server, 1 AMD K6 XP Pro test bed, 1 PIII-750 laptop(mine), 1 XP1400 Laptop(hers), and 2 iPaq 3835's.

Various small computers made into router/firewalls, then stripped for parts, then put back together, etc.

3 PDA's
1 wireless network
1 crappy DSL provider (SCB/Yahoo, the only option in my area less then $70/month🙁)

I have 4 desktops because the wife & kids each wanted their own PC, If I were single, I'd nave a notebook, desktop, 1 printer, 1 PDA.

One of the PDA's belongs to my wife, & I'm considering hocking my Axim on eBay, I just don't use it enough & it's pretty portly...

I'm into minimalism lately 🙂 Second computer is just a backup/storage server that rarely gets used. People who use mutiple computers at home setup each computer to do 1 task with less than 5% cpu usage so they can come to ATOT and brag about their uber network. Hahahahaha!
 
4 Athlons here plus parts of another build in a box here on the floor. Haven't decided what chip to get for the bioStar m7vif mob. Starting to get crowded.
 
I get criticized alot from stereo type people or narrow minded folks. they think one computer per person is more then enough. yea that is them but this is me. Using more then 1 look impossible but i do use them all at the same time because my need are so great!!! simple minded folk can barely keep up with using just one PC because all they do is surf the internet or do online gaming 24hrs a day. IMHO boring!!!
😀 and everytime thing goes wrong their is no 2nd or 3rd computer to come to the rescue...
They just dont see that the more pc you have the more you can do with it...
 
Haha, nice try. I run a computer support business. I have built more pc's over the years then I can count. I have worked on Macs, Unix and Linux, and every Windows OS since DOS. I once had a network of 5 computers, some of them doing SETI, some of them game servers, some of them use to study for MCSE and other certs. Somewhere along the line I realized what a big waste it was to have that many machines when two could abley do the same thing. Face it, you aren't running a multi-million dollar company from your home. You don't support 2000 end users. You don't run a DNS server. You don't NEED more than a couple of machines to do everything you do. You will get over yourself eventually and sell most of your computer stuff. It happens to all of us geeks who realize managing 6 computers is a waste of time and there are actually better things to do in life.

If you own more than two computers, at home.. and I mean 2 to yourself.. not including family, wife, mother, brother ,etc.. then you have some serious issues, and need to get out and grab some fresh air

life is too short.. stop being a dork

I have a gforce 2 ti on my desktop and it has this feature if you install the nvidia drivers. It lets you rotate the desktop at any angle, and even flie it upside down.
BTW, a laptop on the roof would look sweet. Just controlling it would be a pain, unless you plan to do something else with the controls.

I tried the upside down thing and boy does it confuse the heck out of you. I couldnt even click on the yes using a mouse in the 15seconds it gives you to keep the new setting. 😱

Well, it took some doing... but I got over myself 😉

I don't run a multi-million dollar company within my home, but I do remote admin one. As a System's Administrator I am on call 24/7 and I'm not about to drive in to corporate for anything I can control from my soho.

My layout is pretty clean w/each unit set up on their own workstation desk so my "junkyard" isn't the norm. The wife and kids have their own computers to use. I have a "guest" workstation for anyone who's over who wants to make use of the internet/apps/printing etc. A few family members who cannot afford their own quality hardware make use of my network rather than be limited to the local library.

You're right, it takes some work. It can take a lot of time. There've been times over the years when I've stripped down the boneyard and maintained only two all purpose workstations because as it's been said "There's more to life". But then I want to test and try stuff out and have computers for others to use w/out giving anyone access to my production machines. So, I set things up right, image all the drives and go off and enjoy the family and friends and outdoors stuff that has nothing to do with Computer technology. But when I want to or need to, it's all there.

There is also the Multiplayer gaming factor. Friends and I used to get together every few weeks for game night (QIII, UT, CS, HL, Freespace etc.). We tired of everyone spending more time packing/unpacking, setting up/troubleshooting, packing/unpacking when the intention was to spend as much time possible socializing and gaming. Now it's all set up. No card table duct tape jobs. No troubleshooting required, just game on. Makes for a MUCH more enjoyable game night.

I've been fortunate than most in that I have corporate resources available which have helped me get my hardware at relatively low cost. If I'd have had to pay even half of wholesale for most of it - I'd never even gotten started, at least not with decent equipment anyway. And as you can see from my earlier post - many of the rigs would be considered legacy equipment by your avid gamer today.

I admit to being a bit obsessive about my hobby. I truly enjoy IT, gadgets, gaming, computing in general. I've also hit the burnout and readjust aspect of it all. But now I do get out and enjoy the good life. My family takes precedence over my hobby time though it sometimes helps if the wife reminds me or the kids tug on the pants leg 🙂

wyvrns's spot on with his assessment in most regards. Most people would be in the "Get a life" boat if they run that much hardware w/out really needing more than one or two good rigs. And perhaps there's still some lettin' go that I need to do muh self! 😀 But if spending an hour at the screen is more enjoyable to you than spending an hour anywhere else with anyone else, then that's your business. No need to get a life, just make sure you get good equipment, because that IS what you enjoy!😀
