Look at the cumulative sales totals of iPhone 5, 5s, 6 and 6+ sales, even if Apple only sells 1% of those iPhone owners a watch, that's 10 million easy, and you know they'll sell more than just that 1%.

I don't know, most people get their phones on contract still don't they?

I'm not sure how many people that are happy getting a subsidised phone are going to shell out $500 or so out of their own pockets for an accessory to that phone.

Now I think that smartwatches will have decent sales but just working out the sales as a percentage of phone sales seems to miss the point that the two things are sold in very different ways.

It's the only way to calculate or measure Apple Watch sales, they'll be a subset of iPhone sales, period.

Floor mat sales for VW Rabbits/Golfs are a subset of Rabbit/Golf sales...

With Apple product loyalty, 1% is a slam dunk.

1% of all sales, non contact sales or subsidised sales?

I dont see the guy that got his phone free on contract forking out that much money for an accessory.

Actually, Apple has a lot of brand power, you'd be amazed at what people are willing to pay, especially young adults and teenagers without good financial common sense. They can work 25 hours a week on minimum wage, living in mommy's house, but able to buy latest iPhone, iPad, MBP, Beats. That has become the norm these days....sadly. I just don't know if this equates to 1% of Apple users, or 10%.

Either way, some seems to think 1% is a slam dunk, but I don't even consider 5% a success. This is, after all, Apple we are talking about. How is 1% going to shake things up? The other 99% will just point at laugh at those with Apple Watch (and 15% of the 99% will be wearing a traditional watch).

No, but most iPhone sales also tend to skew toward higher-end models (certainly in the first few months, at least).

I was just thinking about this playing into the Apple Watch's potential success, actually. As a rule, Apple caters to higher-end customers -- the only ones who aren't are typically North Americans getting an iPhone 5c free on contract. These are people who are clearly willing to spend on expensive tech. Android certainly has its high-end buyers, but there are fewer of them (Samsung's Galaxy S/Note sales are good, but not that good) and they don't represent the majority. That limits the audience for Android Wear moreso than the iPhone, I think.

However, you bypassed Welshbloke's entire argument: those getting "high end iPhone" are still getting their phones on contract with significant subsidy. The difference between subsidized 5C and 5S is minimal compared to the entire cost of Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch, has zero subsidy at this time.

How does it go?

Denial
Bargaining
Anger
Acceptance

I think that's how Kubler-Ross labeled the stages :)

My fiancee got her iPhone 6+ for $0 because she's on a "new every 2" plan with verizon. She would never spend $500 (or $350) on a random gadget and has no interest in the apple watch.

Most US customers get their iPhones in a heavily subsidized manner. Most of these people aren't going to buy an apple watch. Not even 1% of them.

I read an interesting bit in an article today suggesting that crossover shopping between android/ios watches would likely be very little. I hadn't thought of it but if one works with one device/ecosystem, and the other works with the other, there isn't really a lot of competition going on there after all. In theory.

Google is rumored to be working on an app(s) to allow AW watches to work on Apple devices. And Google has long supported iOS with some excellent apps for years now, particularly Maps, Google Docs, Hangouts, That'll mix things up a bit.

Apple has shown no interest in cross platform apps for anything they make, I believe Beats is the only thing that they own that works on Android.

The whole sector is really in it's infancy now, it'll be interesting to see how things shake out.

Starting to get worried mine won't come on the 24th. 38mm SS w Black Band still processing. Everybody else I know with my setup moved to 'preparing to ship' around noon today....

The order shipped and the watch is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. I'm pleasantly surprised since the original estimate was for June delivery. I guess my wife will be happy.

Curious if anyone here who ordered a Watch has received theirs yet. Mine's still processing, and probably won't ship for another couple of weeks.

Not that I want a watch (fiancee might though).. but with 8 months of lead time, how are people still waiting a month to get theirs? It seems a little baffling to me.

I have mine. It's dope.

Second watch stuck in processing. It is a 38mm stainless steel with black sport band. I can only assume that all of America is obese or has lumberjack wrists because everybody is going 42mm. In my opinion you need 170mm+ wrists to make that look like a watch.

I'm pretty sure I ordered later than you but my wife received hers yesterday afternoon. I ordered the watch close to 8:00 AM Friday morning and it showed June delivery at the time of the order. Maybe I got lucky because I ordered the 38mm version and they had more of smaller size in stock? I don't know. I ordered the 42mm version last night for my daughter after she saw the watch and wanted one too. It said June delivery too on last night's order but I'm hoping I get lucky again and it ships soon. I'm betting Apple is being super conservative with shipping estimates and all orders will arrive sooner than expected.

I only played with it for few minutes but I don't care for the watch at all and have no interest. I think it looks pretty good but that's about it. I don't see how it's very useful and touch accuracy and response isn't that precise for an Apple product.

If you treat it like a fashion accessory, like a watch, instead of a piece of tech then the expense actually looks pretty reasonable. I like the way it looks as just a watch and fitness tracker, which it does as well as any Fitbit or Rolex. Whatever it does beyond that is icing on the cake.

As I understand, there were a lot of orders for 42mm Sport and steel models with the black sport band. If you were part of that group, you were likely to be squeezed out of the launch window pretty quickly. There are other people who've been forced to wait, but your best odds came from getting a 38mm model or one with a different band.

My guess is that Apple is still getting a feel for specific model demand, and didn't expect people to be so conservative with their Watch color choices. That's probably part of why it's launching in April rather than, say, September. The last thing you need as a company is to go into the holiday shopping season without knowing who's going to buy what.
