What's the benefit of smart watch over a simple armband? You get more storage and you bring your phone with you in case of emergency. Would you go for a 1 hour jog on a city trail without a phone? What about a 4 hour bike ride?

I go for 1-2 hour runs all the time without my phone. There was a time not all that long ago when taking a phone with you wasn't even possible. :D

I've been saying for a few years now that Garmin really missed a big market by not including a couple of gigs of flash storage and bluetooth audio in their watches. I don't personally run with music anymore, but I know a lot of people do. I think that device would have been a huge seller. People don't need notifications when they are working out, but they sure would like the music.

But I agree with your point. If you need your phone anyhow to get GPS the watch is kind of an unneeded extra thing to carry around.

iPhone 5S with armband, fitbit and a Casio G-Shock is better over this Apple Watch imo.

It's nice to have that option, I think. For example, if you want to hit the gym or go on a shorter run around the neighborhood -- so long as it does the job, why not use the watch you already have on your arm?

But I look like Brad Pitt and I am afraid all the ladies on the trail will rape me.....

Seriously, I don't think ladies should go out without a phone capable of emergency calls (to family or 911). Just my 0.02.

Diagram of the UI for the watch. I'm really enjoying the haters, especially openwheel. You guys are a real treat, we will look back on this thread in 6 months and fondly remember all your proclamations and predictions of doom.

I don't see too many people predicting doom honestly. Everyone knows Apple is going to sell a buttload of these things.

It's practically a given.

Beyond that all I see is a person that really, really wants to rub his being right in anyone's face he can manage. Unless you agree with everything he says. But that's just my observation.

Well it's no fun if nobody makes predictions. I predict iPhone like success.

My prediction is that sales will be quite strong for this first generation and then things might taper off a little bit unless Apple really knocks it out of the park with the next generation. I think the iPhone success is sort of a given at this point with the typical two year upgrade cycle (in the US at least) and the popularity of the brand. That and phones are sort of necessities at this point. I think the watch is a little tougher to get people to fork over $350+ every year for the latest and greatest. But I don't think this is a problem unique to Apple. I still think this is a market that has yet to show a real need to people. I like my smart watch a lot, but of all the devices I have it is also the first I would give up if I had to. Somebody needs to make a reason for that to no longer be the case.

I will be quite upset if I wasted $874 on something that is useless. Certainly would never buy another apple product

Well, I don't think it is useless at all. Like I said, I really like having a smart watch a lot. At the same time, I don't know if I find it to be $874 useful. Mine was $99 (and a gift at that). I think I need to see another couple of iterations before I find myself willing to shell out real money for one. But, somebody has to be the first.

Useless is in the eye of the user.
And it's also relative to the space occupied by an item.

If a given item is the only one of it's kind that can do what nothing else can, then it's golden. But that isn't often the case, and it's even more often not the case for very long given the nature of competition.

I think my particular brand of personality disorder(profession) prohibits me from understanding the usefulness or interest of predictions/betting/told-you-so-ism unless it involves immediate life/death or serious bodily harm. Everything else is just jerking around. Nothing I think has any bearing whatsoever on this product, so other than some very shallow observations I don't think anything about it. It's a sort of zen openness I maintain with machines after dealing with them intimately for so long. It's hard to explain and took a lot of years to get there.
I can't wear watches because I break them, even if they did have any useful functions I don't have elsewhere in arms reach(there is that space occupied by an item i mentioned). They are interesting, and I appreciate that they are (i hope) stepping stones to more useful stuff in the future. But they aren't worth predicting upon to me, or trying to use.

Mark my words, Apple will make a ton of profit with every generation of Apple Watch regardless of sales figure. It will be debated by iSheeps and haters for centuries to come.

However, a "smart watch" will never be as useful as a smart glasses, smart fitness band or even smart hat. It is simply not a good idea using a computer to mimick a traditional watch in the first place. A wrist watch was invented for another reason. A jack of all trades but master of none is not my type of gadget. Is it yours?

Just like any tool in your garage, do you have one tool that does 15 jobs? Or 12 tools that can do 15 different jobs? A smart phone is a tool that does many jobs extremely well (including its primary job) , but a smart watch cant even tell you time better than a $45 Casio.

I'm not a cookie cutter, I do not follow the crowd. I see people with there I phones in public and it makes me laugh, cause if you need a phone to make you "OK" in public you got issue's. The phone i use is one no one wants, and if I lose it or break it my life will be OK. My bill is reasonable, and i will not pay premium to be OK with other sheeple.

I don't consider myself a sheep, but OK. I think I see a product that offers something new and I'm going to try it.

I only spent $874 on it because if I am going to wear something every day I want it to look nice.
