One sign of how Apple is approaching things differently: it's opening Apple Watch-specific stores within high-end boutiques.

http://www.macrumors.com/2015/03/27/apple-watch-shops-opening/

I think that may be reaching a bit too far, but it shows that Apple is taking a broader approach than we've seen to date. It's trying to legitimize smartwatches as a category, not just sell them to techies. Even LG and Huawei are only doing so much to escape the utilitarian philosophy that dominated until lately.

So you're going on record that the Apple Watch is doomed?

lol, nope not my area of expertise. But I do think the fashion industry is more fickle than even the tech industry and they are playing with fire if they plan on that really being a significant portion of sales in the long term.

So the Apple watch is still doomed and Apple is doomed too?

How about this: "The Apple Watch will outsell all smart watches cumulative total sales in the first week, and future iterations will sell well too."

There is some area between doomed and the best selling thing ever you know.
What's with the extremes?

And I have no idea. They are all goofy toys to me, way too big, way to un-functional.
I'm really disappointed in them all, especially apple since I figured they might still be able to do something revolutionary. It's just another "smart"watch though. I don't want yet another freakin device to haul around and deal with, I want connectivity and technology to integrate seamlessly into how a human being naturally functions. Call me in ten years maybe.

So "Apple disappoints me, because there isn't a bio molecular interface between it's hardware and humans?"

I'm just trying to put you opinion down in one concise quote, you seem pretty opinionated about Apple and the Apple Watch, lots of posts, then you back away from them...

I have lots of opinions but they are just that, opinions, and they vary depending on what set of prerequisites I adopt to look at a thing from. And I'm prone to being kind and trying not to say "you fail" just because I don't favor a thing though it's in my nature to look for problems and obstacles. But I don't favor a thing in this case in several ways, the entire watch thing, google and apple, is disappointing. I grew up in the 80's and 90's on a steady diet of scifi dating from the 60's to what was then current. I realize it's all incremental and stepping stones, but my expectations were/are a lot higher than reality is in 2015 for sure. They are neat gadgets but they aren't the second coming so many people seem to make them out to be imo. They are an annoying tease of what could-be to me, at best. I quit wearing watches ten years ago or better when they kept breaking in what passes for normal use for me, and then one almost got me shot. Strapping something bulky to my wrist is a step backwards, not forwards, to me. I don't think my thoughts on anything ever fit in one concise quote, my friends say I frequently argue three differing opinions at the same time. There are too many angles and factors to just have one direction on most things worth discussing. But discussing is one way to know a thing more fully.

I too quit wearing watches some time ago, a half dozen Casio Databanks, Swiss Watch, Rolex I inherited from my father, quit wearing them when I started carrying a phone every day.

Started back with an Android Wear watch that was IMHO, useless, then a Pebble, then a Pebble Steel in matte black that looked like hell after a few months, finally a Pebble Steel in SS that still looks great. I've backed the Pebble Time Steel, and am likely going to get an Apple Watch too because of the hopefully tighter integration with iOS, and to see if the battery life works for me, the Pebble platform is great, I can switch back and forth with iOS and Android, but it's just not as integrated with iOS as I'd like.

I think the Apple Watch will be a massive hit, because of the stickiness of the ecosystem, the tight integration with iOS, apps, and Apple's loyal customers.

The "killer feature" of the Apple Watch will be apps, thousands of them, everyone will have a "custom" watch, and they're going to love customizing their watches with bands, apps, etc...

Even if only 1/10 of 1/10 or Apple's current customers buy an Apple Watch, it'll me a hit, and make Apple a ton of cash to throw on it's already massive pile of cash.

I have a feeling, that for my use case, the Pebble Time will be a better fit, so I can use my Android and iPhone whenever I feel the urge to switch them up.

Apps on a watch?

You kids and your crazy ideas!

Guess you really are missing those tiny iPhone screens.

/s

But really? What sort of apps are you going to run on that screen? (honest question)

I am going to bookmark this post for future reference because I have a feeling there are a massive number of ways to use a second smaller screen on your wrist. You are going to eat so much crow...

100% with you on iphone screens, prior to the 6 they are all ridiculously small. I remember when the iphone 5 came out and i was just disgusted with the tiny 4" screen they showed, but all the ifans were going nuts over it. A 2012 phone with a 4" screen!

Of all the things I need in my techno life, another screen isn't one of them. No matter how large or small. Give me holograms, graphical overlays on reality, even a seamless voice interface, something. Just not another damn screen.

A version of the Nike+ running app would be bad ass. I have the Nike+ GPS Watch for running and love it to death. If I could get that same functionality on a watch where I could also have my music and Bluetooth, I'll buy 2 of them. I don't find it particularly nice looking, though I do think it's worlds better looking than the competition. The iOS Health stuff is pretty good, and will get better. As a fitness device this watch could really shine.

No I'm not because all I did was ask a question...

Which you didn't answer.

What's the point of an app to play music via Bluetooth on your watch when you also need to have your phone on you?

LOL, I love these forums.

There's going to be some great quotes to use in future threads, this one in particular is pretty good

Seriously, why are you participating and offering opinions in a thread where you know what appears to be nothing about this device?

You know that you could just state your position instead of just insulting people.

For instance you could have just said 'Ah! But the iWatch is a great deal for a 2gb mp3 player'.

For realz. I think any launch of a completely new Apple product has its naysayers, AT just happens to be more of an android club. Thats because we are a tech forum that understands technology and can use it, and we value functionality of aesthetics, most of us anyway. Go on macrumors and you will find people who go the opposite direction with apple. For the most part they aren't tech people and they give terrible tech advice... that's the average iOS user: Clueless

I will be the first to say the Apple Watch is going to be a huge hit, but it will never reach iphone levels unless they open the platform to android, at least somewhat. It has the potential to be the biggest thing Apple has made yet, profit wise. Why close off 60-80% of the market and throw away all that profit just to be snobbish?

I wouldn't entirely agree with that. They should be primary means for tasks that are simple and make sense from your wrist. Android Wear, for everything it does right, makes you pull out your phone far too often for tasks that could be over in a quick second.

Ultimately, the goal of a smartwatch is to make your life easier. That doesn't mean browsing the web from your watch or checking your Facebook feed, but there are times when starting a task from your watch would be faster and easier.

I guess the problem is that I don't really see any tasks that are easier or make sense to do from your wrists, save dismissing notifications and answering/rejecting calls, or taking your heart rate.

I can think of at least some. For example, checking in on a location service like Swarm, which I've done on a watch -- why pull out your phone when you can check in within a couple of seconds? It also makes sense for hailing a cab or rideshare, unlocking your hotel door and the like. Basically, those tasks that you could either accomplish very quickly (faster than it takes to reach for your phone, anyway) or which are sometimes a hassle when you're on the move.

Besides, having just endured a rough Canadian winter, I see a certain appeal to not having to freeze my hands any more than necessary!
