How long will it take?

Since I had to drop my car off back at the shop this morning my only method of transportation is my two feet. I live 5 miles from work so long do you think it will take me to walk it?

are you a NYC walker ? It really depends.

In my uneducated estimation, I'd say 1 mile = 20 minutes.

Are you walking to work or home from work ? If you're allowed to sweat, I'd run a mile, walk a mile, etc.

If you are fit, you can walk a mile in 10 minutes no problem and without breaking a sweat. But since this is 5 miles, you might take 12 minutes per mile. Thus if you are fit, 1 hour will do. Of course if you are the average unfit person, I'd say 1.5 hours for a casual stroll.

Let me magically pull one out of my ass.
Don't know why but I LOL'd at that one.

Yeah I haven't had a bicycle since I was like 14 myself. I really should get one for around-the-block errands and stuff.

Excellent breakdown. I agree with this because I do five in an hour of relatively brisk walking.

Man, I knew fat kids in school who couldn't RUN a mile in 10 minutes. I think you better plan for at least an hour and a half so you don't have to powerwalk the whole way.

Have you ever moved at a 6mph pace. I'd say at that point you've moved on to a jog, not a "brisk walk."

Plenty of times. In school we had to do the mile in under 10 minutes for the bi-yearly presidential fitness tests. Half of the people could walk it in under 10 minutes, including me. 25% could jog it in under 10 minutes. 25% couldn't complete the task in that time (if at all).

I personally was in track and cross country. I wasn't very good. But I'd run 5 miles in ~31 minutes. I've jogged/walked 8 miles in 59 minutes (we had to beat an hour so we all walked much of the way to be done in just under an hour).

To put things into perspective, Olympic walking velocities are about 9 miles/hour on a ~12 mile course. 9.3 miles per hour will win you an Olympic walking medal. Obviously, probably no one here is an Olympic walker. But 6 miles per hour isn't out of the question for walking speeds for a fit person.
