how long is your commute?

It's about 8 miles each way. Takes me anywhere from 20-45+ minutes by car (depends on how bad the intown gridlock is) and 30 minutes by mountain bike. Needless to say, I opt for the bike 90% of the time. Much less aggravating.

7 miles done in less than 15min by car. i want to get a bike and see how long it would take me but i think i would get run over in a few places.

mine is 22 miles each way. takes me about 20 - 25 mins to get there in the morning. thank god its going AWAY from DC, the total opposite way of traffic. its kinda funny looking at the other side of the road on the way to work, because its pretty much a parking lot for pretty much the entire 22 miles. i feel sorry for the other side 🙁

I used to have a 35 mile commute...now it is only like 8. I don't think I ever want to go back to the 35 mile commute. An hour in the car on both ends of a long day is no fun.

Get a detailed map of the area and get creative with your route. My bike route is different from my driving route as I avoid big roads as much as possible. I'd rather add a few miles and not have to dodge psycho commuters.

I work very close to the center of downtown and have to deal with university and hospital traffic as well...

I'm currently in the process of moving from my apt to my new house so I'll give both figures:

Apartment
------------Distance 8 blocks
------------Time 3 minutes (sometimes get stuck on multiple traffic lights downtown)

House
------------Distance 2.5 miles
------------Time 5 minutes (only 3 traffic lights this route, but traffic is pretty heavy...luckily, there's a switch lane)

That's like 8mph.......you need to train harder. 😛

Hmmm I just checked on a ruteplanning site it turns out there's actually 8km, and there's lots of traffic lights 😛

It really depends on which part of the day I am working. The To-Work/To-Home:

Its about 36-miles one-way commute.

Morning Shift: 55-minutes/75-90 minutes
Evening Shift: 40-minutes/35-minutes
Night Shift: 35-minutes/45-60 minutes.

This is assumine no Atlanta traffic suprises, GDOT construction, etc.

BTW, the actual commute is only part of the picture. If I worked the morning shift I would leave at 6AM to get there just before 7AM, but if I leave at 6:30AM I'd be lucky to make it to work by 8AM. The only way I could get the morning To-Work commute down to below 45-minutes would be to leave at 5AM for an 8AM work shift. That's BS.

Also, if I cut the distance in half and spend the same amount on a home I'd go from 2600 SqFt home to about 1400-1500 SqFt., and that would drop to about <1000 SqFt to reduce it to one-quarter of the commuted distance. A friend travels 50% further than I do, has a 2200 SqFt house that he paid about 40% less than I did.
