damn, mine take like 10 minutes, no kidding. There's a thunderstorm in my area and power went out for like 30 seconds, exactly at 9:30 PM, it finished rebooting around 9:38. I was trying to watch fuckin Kobe and his monkeys fucking shit their fuckin pants... missed fuckin 10 mins of action...

How long does your take? It's a 6 year old non DVR Scientific Atlanta or some shit like that... are there faster ones now? should I swap for a newer? will it help?

Depends. Generally five minutes or more. It's a rebranded Dish Network box. Not sure which model. It throws off a lot of heat too. These things are terribly inefficient.

I've got a series two Tivo, and it takes around five-ten minutes to reboot.

The VIP722 from Dish is well know for heat issues, I have replaced mine several times. I now have a little USB fan on the exhaust side to pull out heat. I will see how it does once summer hits.

probably wouldn't be a bad idea to put a elcheapo UPS behind it, I have for cable router, vonage and phone, well worth it, I should put one behind it too... wonder how much power it consumes though.. need to Kill-A-Watt it...

Perhaps they do a hard drive scan of sorts during boot?

My DirecTV dvr box is literally always checking for drive errors. It's very annoying. Directv says it's normal with the latest firmware. Why would a dvr box need to run diagnostic scans 24/7? :(

10 minutes seems about right. We have whole house DVR, so a reboot requires all the boxes to re-find each other.

10 minutes. The reason is that when the power goes out, it loses all it's Updates. That goes from Firmware to Program Scheduling.

The picture and channels come back under a minute. The menus and guides about 10-15 minutes.

Yeah, TiVo takes annoyingly long to boot up. Hell, I've seen Cisco routers with every damn module you can imagine start passing traffic faster than my freakin' TiVo starts displaying television after a reboot.

I had a box that would take about 20 minutes to boot. At some point, they brought me a new box. This new box didn't actually store the software, it would go out download it, then run it. Took about 30 minutes to start up.

forever and a day.

and then a nearly unimaginable amount of time until guide data is restored

this shit is ridiculous. cable needs some serious reinventing. FCC has not played nice with Cable Labs, that is for sure. Well, the whole Vendor, Manufacturer, Standards, and Government circle jerk thing, at the least, has screwed over us end-users.
