forever and a day.

and then a nearly unimaginable amount of time until guide data is restored

this shit is ridiculous. cable needs some serious reinventing. FCC has not played nice with Cable Labs, that is for sure. Well, the whole Vendor, Manufacturer, Standards, and Government circle jerk thing, at the least, has screwed over us end-users.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next gen consoles could somehow double as cable boxes. They've already got some networks on board in the US with Verizon etc.

Plus I remember Charlie Rose interviewing Bill Gates and he said one of their biggest blunders was not reinventing the way we watch TV along with missing search and tablets being terrible. The Xbox is probably their gateway into that.

Very long time, these devices are running on old sh*t hardware, is also the reason the menus are pathetically slow and they don't feel fast. Directv isn't too bad. My old cable boxes (e.g. scientific atlanta) were stunningly slow.

It takes about maybe 1 minutes to reset with Charter like 5ish with Time Warner Cable.
Time Warner Cable has much better services though.
Whats with the damn freezing and losing info that charter likes doing every so often...

damn, mine take like 10 minutes, no kidding. There's a thunderstorm in my area and power went out for like 30 seconds, exactly at 9:30 PM, it finished rebooting around 9:38. I was trying to watch fuckin Kobe and his monkeys fucking shit their fuckin pants... missed fuckin 10 mins of action...

How long does your take? It's a 6 year old non DVR Scientific Atlanta or some shit like that... are there faster ones now? should I swap for a newer? will it help?

As I re-read this thread this morning, I am reminded of the following joke:

I have a Cisco DVR box that is also the base receiver unit since I have whole house DVR from my cable company. It can take over 15mins some times to go through a full reboot after I pull the plug on the unit to completely reset it.

My cable box doesn't take long to boot up, but I have no guide information for like 15 - 30 minutes. I have a UPS backing up my Tv, cable box, and PS3 now, so when there is a storm and the power goes out for a minute or so, I don't have to worry.

I've got a multiroom cisco setup that easily goes 10 minutes. Aboutt 2 minutes for the hardware and the rest for syncing and getting the guide info. Way too damn long.

I have an old Scientific Atlanta 8300 HD. It takes about 3 minutes to the point where I can power it on, and another 3 minutes before the channel guide and DVR functionality works right.
