How long do you think I can go without doing anything before getting fired?

I've literally done NOTHING for the last 9 business days (2 weeks tomorrow).

Granted there isn't much work I could be doing, but I'm not even doing the stuff I can.

I've got a report I've gotta write that's supposed to be sent off to an insurance company tomorrow (I've had 2 weeks to write it), that I haven't started yet and will take at least another week to finish, if I started this week, which I won't.

I don't think I've ever cared less about a job.

My boss is in another city comes in maybe once a month. I don't think I've spoken a word to her in over 3 weeks.

I figure that by the end of next week I'll probably get a phone call asking what's going on and then at a minimum, another 2 weeks before I get fired.

I'm betting on 3 weeks.

What do you guys think?

*Update April 10, 2008*

It's been one week now, and nobody has said a word yet. I took monday, tuesday and wednesday off work. Just said I was sick. Came to work today at 10:30 totally hungover and haven't lifted a finger all day.

*Update April 14, 2008*

I just got this in an email:

Please advise of the following

XXXXXX - this is for an initial assigned March 13th - report is now DUE (30 days from referral) - Please advise.

You were also assigned an internal service request from [name] to do a 4 week JSTP at the office - Please advise as to how this is going and what has been accomplished thus far.

You were assigned a new referral on April 9th - please advise whether you've connected with the referral source and claimant to start services?

I haven't started anything on any of the three things I'm being asked about...

*Update April 15, 2008*

I got a phone call this morning. It startled me a bit, but let it go to voicemail (I was already on the phone).

My senior editor verbally re-stated what was said in the last email and said I needed to get back to her ASAP.

I replied to her email and told her my report was mostly completed, however I was waiting on another form from the clients psychiatrist before I could complete the report. I made no mention of the other items.

Her response was "Your report was due out yesturday - you'll need to get this form asap!

I think I just bought myself at least another couple of weeks 😛

*Update April 17, 2008*

I just got another email, this time from my boss...

[my name]

Please send whatever you have done of your initial to [senior] - she will provide direction on what to address with the psychiatrist once consent received.

Update on the file you were waiting to hear back from adjuster?

Your file status for the JSTP has been done?

Please advise

[the boss]

My boss doesn't sound too worried, but the frequency of contact with this person has gone up quite a bit in the last couple of days.

I decided to do the report last night (only took me like 4 hours), although I haven't submitted it yet. I don't wanna screw anyone over. If I get canned, the work is still done.

Should I just submit? When I do, I 'll probably have to change the title of the thread and I'll just become another lazy employee that only does enough to not get fired...

*Update April 17, 2008*

I just submitted my report.

I literally did nothing from March. 21 to April 17.

*Update April 21, 2008*

I've decided to quit my job. I called my boss and there was no answer, so I had to leave a message asking her to call me back when she had a chance.

Seems ironic somehow...

*Update April 25, 2008*

So I talked with my boss and she was understanding that I didn't enjoy the work I was doing.

Anyway, long story short, she says I'm not permitted to quit until the report I do is done to their satisfaction. (I need to make a few edits to it)

How long do you think I can drag that out? 😛

*Update April 29, 2008*

Assuming the edits I submitted go through, my last day should be friday (in which case, wednesday, thursday and friday I will also have done nothing)

I got about 70 billable hours over the last 160 hours

This has been going on for 2-3 months now. Sooo, I would daresay at least that.

I've billed 8.7 hours since Feb. 25.

I think you are the epitome of worthless and should seriously consider suicide.

This is America! This is also how most of the people I know got promotions and raises at their jobs!!! 🙂

Dude, get another job! Seriously, there has to be something else that drives you a little more ... life's too short to waste away.

I work about 2 hours a day out of 8 I would say, in terms of actual work. My boss is a once every 2 month visit style person, and I get to work 3 days at home on a laptop...

12 months and counting. I think you are fine.

Well, he's getting paid for doing nothing... I think that works pretty well. I assume from the way he puts his words in the OP that he is planning to get a new job.

I've just started applying... Hopefully I'll land something and be able to say I quit rather than being fired. Or I'll just request that they lay me off... that would be even better.

Yeah no kidding. I get so bored filling 8 hrs/day with crap. I've researched home theater speakers, and home audio, HDTVs, cars, houses, and many other things all while at work. I only do 4-5 hours of work/day (which on this thread is FAIL), and the rest I still wonder what to fill it with.

Oh well, it pays the bills and keeps me from sitting at home bored 🙂

Sez you 😉

Many years ago, I had a job doing technical research. I had to search through tens of thousands of pages of documents and try and find certain technical references. Well, being the geekie type of guy I am, I stayed late one evening, and ran all the pages through a scanner and then processed it through an OCR program. No, they never thought of this as OCR programs were sort of new and not well received. Anyway, after having all this inforamtion in the computer, finding all the technical references took about an hour. The time limit on the job was listed: Until done. Well, what should I have done? Billed them 6 hours of actual time spent? Or estimated how much time it would have taken me had I done it their way, page by page. Well, to avoid getting flames, I won't divurge how much time I actually billed, but it was two of the best years I have ever had.

The kicker?! Because I did such a thorough job the first time, they hired me again to re-research the same documents looking now for other references. LOL

Oddly enough, the most productive thing I've done here in the past week is update my resume and cover letter
