How long do monitors last?

Years and years and years. . . I fully expected that when I plunked down $500 for my 19" ViewSonic PS790 back in '99. You might say I was banking on it. Monitors are usually the single most expensive computer component, so you want it to last a long time. Mine is one of those "almost" flat monitors, and I don't really mind it at all. I don't see why it couldn't last another 4 years, but I'm sure I'll have a big 19-20" LCD by then. I'm not going to plunk down for another monitor for a little while yet though, unless this one happens to smoke itself, and the repair isn't cheap.
