How long can you go without music?

About a week ago it dawned on me that I really don't like virtually any of the music that is played on the radio, regardless of the genre (rock, country, pop, etc.). Also, I'm really tired of all the cds that I have. So I decided to turn off the radio in my vehicle and see how long I could last.

I'm now convinced that listening to the radio is an addiction. Even though I don't really like any of the music, my first instinct when I get in my truck is to reach for the power knob on the radio. This has happened every time since the experiment began; I have to catch myself every time. Also, I'll catch myself craving sound (I don't think "craving" is too strong a word here) - I don't think it would even matter what was playing.

Overall, I think my drives are much more stress-free now. I'm sure I'll eventually break down and turn it back on, but so far it has been interesting.

Has anyone else done something like this?

I honestly think I'd die without music. I actually almost died when I broke my iPod and didn't get a new one for 3 weeks.

I can't stand silence when I'm doing something not-fun. I always need some kind of noise in the background - radio music, talk shows, baseball, etc.

Wait, so you're stress-free even though you're craving sound?

Yeah - its kind of weird how calming a quiet drive can be.

Yet more support for the "music addiction" theory...

Yeah - its kind of weird how calming a quiet drive can be.

I drove to dallas and back from houston last weekend, didn't take a charger for the ipod and it ran out about a third of the way into the drive back, so I did most of that with just wind and road noise. Wouldn't do it voluntarily, but it didn't really bother me.

I did start talking to myself, though, which kinda weirded even me out but I couldn't stop. not just a few words here and there, either.

I could do it indefinitely. I'm listening to music right now, but I wouldn't have a problem turning it off.

I could go indefinately IF I could still watch TV or do other forms of entertainment. I've still never purchased a single CD/cassette/record or downloaded a single song. Music just does nothing for me. I have a stereo here right next to me at work and 98% of the time it is off. I have one at home too and it gets turned on twice a year.

I did play musical instruments for a total of 9 years. I do love to go dancing. But I really could go without music.

I've never used the radio in my car unless another passenger turned it on. I like having quiet car rides and hate everything on the radio.

Maybe a day...assuming I had something to do the entire day, otherwise I'd have the radio in the car, home system or portable system on.

I tried that (turning off radio/CD player in my car) once. I think it lasted a couple days, haha.

I live without music 90% of the day...probably more because I don't like most of what's on the radio. I usually listen to Sports Talk. :)

I drive an hour each way between work and home, and for the past 6 months I've been listening to nothing but podcasts from my iPod pumped through my car audio system. No bad music, no annoying commercials, just good information about subjects that I'm interested in.

Down with music!

It would be nearly impossible to completely deprive someone of all music. It's everywhere. No television, no radio, no video games. You can't even go outside without hearing some music.

I read the OP, don't worry, but the title made me believe that you were thinking of cutting off ALL music, not just music when you go driving, so I'm addressing that. To cut off all music you'd pretty much only be able to read books all day. Even cooking has noticable musical rhythm in it, so you'd have to order takeout all the time. But you'd have to disconnect the doorbell and you'd have to hope that the delivery man isn't wearing loud headphones or isn't practicing lines for his musical theatre performance. Also, you'd have to kill all of the birds that come near your home in case they started singing. You can't see anyone or anything, all you can do is sit in a non-rocking chair reading books.
