Roll the clock forward another 7 years and I have good credit now , several credit cards and I hold a job...I am not wealthy or anything and really I am in debt more than I should be but I am working on that.

Today I got a letter saying I owed these people $1150 some odd dollars...good god man! Its been 14 fricking years , can they still legally bother me for money? How in the hell did they track me down, I must have moved a half dozen times in 14 years!!

Im gonna be 80 and still getting letters from these guys....I not gonna go out like that!

Can I borrow $300 off you?

Both BMG and the Doubleday Book Club have hired collection agencies to get their money from me. I received dozens of empty threats and never paid a dime, eventually they gave up. But in both of those cases, I knew there was nothing legally binding me to pay them.

But your case sounds a bit more serious.

Yah, right pal...go look in the mirror instead of doing the work of God.

When I look in the mirror I see someone who has taken care of all his financial responsibilities, not someone who whines because he doesn't feel he should have to pay the money he owes. Man up and take care of your business so my interest rates don't go up.

NOOOOO don't pay them!

Whatever you, do don't pay them, before you listen to what I have to say.

Yeah morally you should pay. But if you do it will HURT your credit. Since it has been seven years since you havent paid them, nothing is on your credit report anymore, about owing them money.

If you were to pay they can actually put on your credit report that you paid a deliquent fine. This will negatively effect your credit rating. Even paying a dime of what you owe can screw you!

If they are only sending you letters screw it and just rip them up. The company who you originally owed the money to has long ago written it off. They sold it to another company for maybe 50% value, who has sold it off again, and again. The company who has your debt now bought it for pennies on the dollar, along with 1000's of other debts. Paying them off would give the mega profits off you.

There is nothing they can do but send you letters/call you if they have your phone number. It would not be profitabke to go to court for them. Look up creditors rights to see what you can do to stop them. I for one wouldnt even aknowledge them.

So let me get this straight, you came on to this forum looking for your thievery to be accepted, and it wasn't so you resort to insults regarding post counts?

Pathetic.

People talking on the internet doesn't degrade society. People buying things on credit and not paying them back is what can ruin a society. great depression anyone?

Utter nonsense.

It's a charge off. Doesn't matter who it gets sold to. You can probably work a deal with them and pay less than half of what they want to get it free and clear. Just be sure to get a letter of proof that it has been PAID IN FULL. (write that on the check if you use that form of payment)

It's best to do this as this definitely affects your FICO score. You can never get anywhere near the best rates on a loan if this shows up on your credit score. It may not have at the time you got previous credit. If they are sending you letters, you can bet your ass it has been reported.

Anything with a 9 is very bad on your credit. Make an attempt to discharge this.

Cheers!

normal consequence for stealing stuff is getting arrested. then you lose the stuff and pay a fine or go to jail, and sometimes pay a lawyer too and you have less than nothing to show for it. they're just askin' you to pay for what you stole. that's pretty lucky.

if you'd done it sooner, they'd be asking for less, if you'd paid for it in the first place, woulda been a better deal. longer you wait, more that watch is going to cost.

you still have the watch?

wow, rough forum tonight...

Theft, no theft, big deal, it is said and done.

He made a mistake as a kid and could hurt his credit profile if he makes ammends for it now.

Cut the guy a break, he asked a legitimate question and got flamed for it.

it was already ruined for 7 years. The orignal company has already written the debt off. Paying it now can only hurt him and his family more.

Sometimes you can negotiate a letter to say they wont touch your credit but not always. Without that paying it off would be worse for him then not paying it.

It's a debt he's had 14 YEARS to repay and has chosen not to. It's not just a mistake he made as a "kid" (over the age of 18), it's a mistake he's chosen not to correct for 14 years. And he's asking for advice on how to continue not repaying his debt - he doesn't deserve a break, he deserves to be flamed. It is a big deal because people who do this stuff make prices higher for the rest of us.

Even if you have a "pay for delete" letter the chance of the junk debt buyer actually following through on the bargain is slim, as they do not have to. Ignoring the debt is also not a good thing, as he will more than likely be receiving collection notices until he is 80 years old. Once the interest reaches a rate that the junk debt buyers feel is lucrative, they will more than likely sue.

He should just look over the laws relating to credit and collections, and follow them in requesting a validation of debt.

Just my 2 pesos.

Ignore it, write them a letter stating the SOL is up and legally they have no claim to the money. Atleast most likely, almost everywhere SOL is 7 years, but double check.

Collection agencies are pure EVIL. I have one currently on my credit report from a hospital bill, the hospital sent them a letter asking them to please remove the account from my credit report as it was reported in error. They say OK, but never do so, it has totally ruined my credit for the last 6 months, I will be filling suit against them for not correcting it, and veryfing the debt with the credit agency when I disputed it. They KNOW it is not a valid debt, yet they continue to verify it.

The original creditor has always written off the debt. IF you actually pay it you will hurt yourself, you will give them scum suckers tons of money, they pay PENNIES on the dollar for these accounts, hoping to collect, usually illegally mind you. Also IF you pay it, they can report it as PAID collection account on your report for 7 years, so you will actually hurt yourself. The item should no longer be on your credit report as it is past 7 years, if it is still there dispute it, 7 years from last date of activity is the longest they can report it.

Also send them a letter to never contact you except through mail. If they do they are breaking the law, if you request them to stop they have to.

And so are collection agencys. They break the law hundreds of times daily to get their money. Now morally yes he owes the money, but guess what, even IF he pays it... the original creditor will never see a penny of that money.
