I want to use MSN & AIM together.. but I wonder if it'd be better than using Middleman's AIM.

Middleman's AIM has complete ad blocking + history log.

How is trillian in this case? Can I still use direct connect?

to answer your questions - there are no ads, direct connect works, it has a history/log feature

I can't be bothered to pay for it.

You don't have to pay for Trillian Basic. The Trillian site tells you this and also tells you the differences between basic and pro.

Gaim doesn't have *nearly* the number of features and available mods/bonuses that Trillian does.

probably true but not everyone needs their IM program to clean their house and give them a happy ending. i like mine to sit quietly in the taskbar until i need it and not take up resources.

used trillian since a friend of mine found it, awesome program, each new upgrade (after the betas) have been better than the first, with more addons and the like.
