You're a bit confused, or deliberately misrepresenting. Until LBJ the Dixiecrats were part of the Democratic Party (after all, the GOP was Lincoln's party, beat them in the Civil War and those people hold grudges a long time). After LBJ moved the country actually towards racial equality somewhat, the Dixiecrats revolted and became the mainstay of what is now the southern GOP party.

Bryd has more than owned up to, and apologized for sucking up to the KKK back in the 30's and 40's.

My real point: we need term limits for all Congressmen and women.

Young blood, new ideas, etc...

One and your done.

Do congressmen/women have any "exit" agreement when they are no longer in office about what they can do/where they can work?

Term limits for Senators!!

That is what an election is for. Term limits merely force good people out of office, against the will of the voters.

When's the last time you saw a good person holding a federal office?

So, people like Steven Hawking should be swept under the rug because he can't stand, and he's too old for fresh ideas?

Term limits are a good idea. A better idea, and much more workable, would be to abolish the seniority system in Congress (both houses). Such a reform would be vehemently opposed by nearly every Senator and Representative, regardless of party, because the seniority system goes a very long way towards insuring their personal re-election.

I really care too much what would replace the seniority system-heck a lottery for chairmanships, etc. would be preferable to keep sending old fools like Ted Stevens and Storm Thurmond back into office.

Steven Hawking is mentally ok. As stated earlier in the thread, if he had, say, parkinson's, that is a major mental problem. My grandpa has it, I know.

The US political system is driven by money and with only two options and the incumbent for one side running, it's almost impossible for Senators to get turfed. Take a look at the re-election rate of those guys; it's disgusting.
