country music, keith urban, and tim mcgraw should never be used in the same paragraph.

it's like saying avril lavigne is a punk rocker.

country music died the day Johnny Cash died.

Bah, like I've said in countless other threads, you are more than likely just not making any effort to find the good stuff. It won't fall into your lap. There are a bunch of crappy bands out there sure, but there are also plenty of good ones.

I can assume that either

a: You don't like music
b: You have bad taste in music.
c: Your bored and your posting whatever comes to your mind.
d: all of the above

Sorry, I'm just being honest. These kinds of threads are lame because in reality there is so much good music out there, both old and new.

You're not being honest. You are being an idiot. The percentage is about right. For every one song that is good/ original there are 99 that suck. It has always been that way.

The problem is the sucky stuff is quickly forgotten and everyone pines away for the good old days.

Yea thanks for calling me an idiot. And thanks for coming up with percentages that don't make sense. Where is the proof that about 99 percent of music sucks? How would you know that 99 out of every 100 songs suck? How much music have you listen to? All I'm saying is that there are no numbers, no scientific evidence to back that up. And a lot of it is based on personal preference too.
I never said you were an idiot. Your not an idiot if you don't like music. Your not an idiot if you have bad taste in music. You are an idiot if you think that '99 percent of all music sucks'

How does that make me an idiot? What are you saying? Is all music good? What percentage would you feel is right? I didn't say that there wasn't any good music out there. What I said was that 99% of music sucks and from any one individual's standpoint that is going to be true. My definition of sucks is that it is not enjoyable for me to listen to for whatever reason and 99% of music sucks.

no one's mentioned euro-trance/techno, and asian music is really nice too - Utada Hikaru, Do As Infinity, The Indigo, some earlier songs from BoA, Shinhwa, etc. I kind of like the chinese pop girl-group S.H.E. heh.

Lol, the only thing worse than American pop music is asian pop music. :p

And to the guy above babbling about the 9 out of 10, you said 99% bs please off yourself. Now. I would assume that the op is not being literal when he says 99%, and if you can't figure that out (or are just extremely anal and like to start sh!t) you might have some problems.

Ummmm...was the "from any individual standpoint" too much for you to understand? Why do you think people bitch about buying whole albums? Cause most of the songs are filler and suck.

I even gave my definition of "sucks" in this context. Are you saying no music sucks because someone somwhere enjoys it?

1) I was looking at someone else's post, not yours, and only halfassed at that. But to go off on such a tangent to argue about 99% when clearly it was used as an expression seems rather silly to me.

2) Now we are getting a little deeper, thinking about what is the meaning of music and what makes it great. Is music supposed to be catchy and liked by everyone (A sides) or it is simply supposed to exist (B sides). Can we say that music sucks even though there is someone out there that likes it? I tend to think so, but before labeling crap music, perhaps we should try and define what is good music first.

what can I say i'm really passionate about music.

And sometimes I can take things literally. But Expression or not, the OP implies that most of today's music sucks when in fact there are so many artists doing awesome things, whether mainstream or underground.

See, these kinda questions could be really good topics. Instead we have topics about how today's music sucks, and then we have a billion people(hehe) agree with the OP, and life goes on with another pointless thread.

fiery furnaces - blueberry boat Here is an album that is a great example of new music that is good.

I like music that takes awhile to get used to. Music that you have to listen to and listen to until you get it. To me, that always seems to be guaranteed good music. The catchy music out there, which is normally more commercial, is not bad music in my opinion. Its good music, and had I not been exposed to other music, I'd be listening to it, and there would be nothing wrong with that. But the music I search for is what I consider better music. For example, its like comparing Silver to Gold. Silver is really good, but Gold is even better. Had I thought that only silver existed, I would have been content with it. But having found Gold, I can see that there are things even better than silver.

I don't know, I listen to alllllllot of music, and for someone to say that music, new or old, sucks bothers me. These people are getting sick and tired of silver, when in fact there is gold out there. I know my anology is not that great, but thats my 2 cents.

look stop quibbling. its just another way of saying that almost all of efforts fail to reach greatness. by definition extraordinary exceptional art is rare. thats just how it is, whether it be in literature, music, film, paintings, sculpture whatever. tens of thousands of books are published each year, how many do you think are great? very very few. how many music tracks are released each year? i don't know how many exactly, but i'm sure its a huge number. very little stands the test of time. if 99% didn't suck, we'd be swamped in an ocean of awesome stuff.

Good deal. Art and these forums don't really mesh well, and threads have been made trying to dive a little deeper into music and all that turns up is 99% of the people on here couldn't really care less. :p

And yeah I do get tired of people bitching about music these days, always trying to compare everything to "the good ol days". I've said it on here countless times before, music is more experimental and creative now than it has ever been. There are countless musicians out there doing some really, really great things. Most of you unfortunately have the attitude that if it is good then it must be popular so I would have heard it already. It just doesn't seem to work that way. You have to actually do a little research of your own, but once you find the good stuff it is all worth it.

Go out and listen to some local bands, not these big name acts with the fancy shows etc. I'm talking about the broke band that no one has ever heard of that puts on the most kick ass show you have ever seen. No lasers, no smoke, stupid fvcking masks, or any of that other stuff that just seems to try and make up for what these big bands lack in actual creative talent.

I dont like them myself but now u are saying ICP is fvckin stupid(mask), techno is stupid(lasers), and i guess early 80s late 70s music is stupi(smoke).....I already posted in this thread that people should get there face out of MTV....Hell if ICP didnt were stupid fvckin mask u think they would suck to their fans now???no they wouldnt....cause no body goes to a damn kiss concert to see the face paint, they go for the music(well most)and please, todays small bands which try to get out(most of them) still fvckin suck compared to 70s classic. so get ur head out ur arse and admit it.

because record companies realized that there are ALOT of stupid 12-17 yr old females out there who for some ungodly reason think that hillary duff or lindsey lohan has a shred of singing talent so they stick em in a studio with 40 yr old writers who are paid alot more than i am to write songs about how its so bad and terrible to be a white upper middle class teenage female.

that or its terrible rap music with stupid lyrics that mean nothing. even guys like eminem and dre who can link two sentences together without saying thug, nikka (u kno what i mean), or some other 4 letter curse in either.

that having been said and moving onto the real reasons the music industry has nothing to do with being talented or caring about "music" persay. thanks to britney spears and nsync artists have realized that the money isnt in selling records or touring but rather about being a "media mogul" and plastering your face all over every magazine, getting a cameo in every movie, and generally degrading yourself to the level of street corner whore.

there are some good bands out though, the trouble is searching for the good ones in the see of crap known as indie rock.

Music is a revolution. You have to wait until it comes back around to something you like.
