The problem is the sucky stuff is quickly forgotten and everyone pines away for the good old days.
LOL, so quicky they forget Disco and Country Music. I think a more apt discription would be that there is a lack of creativity in todays music.

And talent, you forgot talent.

Music taste is cultural. People tend to like only what they were listening to when they were in teenagers. I started listening mostly to Jazz in college but I still like the stuff I grew up with.

I have read reviews of the Beatles when they first hit the US. The established critics thought they sucked and were too simplistic.
Actually their early music was rather simplistic. If they had just stuck with that type of music Lennon and Mcartney would never have beed considered the greatest composers on the last 40 years.

I think an individual's taste in music is naturally influenced by their culture, but I don't think it stops people from enjoying music from other cultures/influences.
I still love Neil Diamond because my mother played Neil Diamond when I was a kid. She also listened to the White Album extensively, and I still don't care for the Beatles. Never did.
I enjoy things far and wide. Girl from Ipanema/Stan Goetz all the way to Sandman/Metallica and all points between. I enjoy classical music and I enjoy Sitar music. I enjoy piano comps and I enjoy Yngwie Malsteen tearin it up.
I like Don Williams, Hank Jr., and Zepplein.
Sade makes my loins tingle.
Blues, Rythym, and most anything that ties in are probably my favorites, and I never had any real exposure to any of that as a child.

I can assume that either

a: You don't like music
b: You have bad taste in music.
c: Your bored and your posting whatever comes to your mind.
d: all of the above

Sorry, I'm just being honest. These kinds of threads are lame because in reality there is so much good music out there, both old and new.

Pat McGee Band and Sister Hazel are really good. I have lots of other bands I listen to that some of you may not have heard of. Most real talent isn't on the radio.

You're not being honest. You are being an idiot. The percentage is about right. For every one song that is good/ original there are 99 that suck. It has always been that way.

The entire music market is based on selling as much sh!t as they can on one album with a few decent singles to carry it, and designing music so that you'll eventually get bored with it and want to go out and buy something new.

There is still some good music. I dont think that revolutionary sounds and chords will be made any time soon, but some of todays lyrics are unbelievable. For somr good lyrics, listen to The Used, Red Hot chili Peppers, or my personal favorite, Against me!

^ winner / end of thread.

there's tons of good music out there right now, but very little of it makes it to mainstream radio. check out your local college radio station or find a couple good internet stations.

All the new bands they play on pop rock radio stations sound the same - the Creed/Nickelback sound or the punk rock Simple Plan/Bowling for Soup sound. It's disgusting. And other genres... well let's just say better stuff is left off the air waves...

Agreed, although my preferences would be Classic Hard Rock.

Classic rock was woven from the melodic period of music of my parents (from the 30's and 40's) and the black blues/gospel experience that often put a premium on musical expertise.

A lot of music today has catchy parts, but melodies certainly can't be called complex or involving a lot of changes. You couple this with the a lack of appreciation for musical expertise and you have a dearth of quality music.

When you think of Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray, Page, etc. you'er really appreciating the total focus that they put in throughout their lives to master their trade. What you have now are bunch of wannabes without the dedication to achieve the same level of mastery.

uh, no. the blame falls on the people who buy this crap. the recording industry is just catering to these people.
