I played BF3. I enjoyed the SP campaign. Same complaints about BF4 I have for BF3.

Obviously BF isn't the game for you then. Bf3/4 maps are small compared to BF2 also. And a pro tip: never play ArmA if you think BF maps are too big.

BF doesn't suck. Its not an arena style shooter and I wish people would stop trying to turn it into one. Go back to COD or UT if BF isn't your style.

None of these games are really bought for their single player though. Same with CoD games.

It's not for you, fine, feel free to play something else.

I only play sniper servers hardcore TDM. When I play the normal game mode I get this feeling like, "why the hell am I playing this stupid game?"

Aside from that I am finding the whole "modern warfare" theme in FPS games to be growing stale.

I am sort of in the same boat, but I'd rather not go back to WW2 shooters. I am so tired of killing Nazis. What other eras are there? Futuristic? That is quite hard to do. Civil War period? No thanks... Korean War / Vietnam era is modern enough (and, because of BC2, holds a place in my heart), but that doesn't really distinguish itself much from modern warfare.

What will the devs do when they don't have eleventy billion scopes and grips to add for each weapon? :awe:

Vietnam might be nice now that we have the hardware to render a decent jungle environment, but I don't know if the gameplay would be all that great. Hasn't it been a few years since we've had a WWII game now? And Planetside kinda has the future bit covered I guess.

It has a learning curve and you have to get used to it. Died a lot in BC2 when i first started playing, never got into any sort of ryhtm and it wasn't very fun. After a while though, I started settling in and things got a lot better. The constant confusion (omg where are they shooting from?! *dead*) and dying stopped and I was racking up kills and it was fun.

I started BF4 recently, having not playing BC2 for a long time, and experienced the same initial pains. Maybe worse, since there is more detail on screen and finding the enemies is like finding Waldo. Going through the same process as before, getting better. I know I'm making process when I live long enough and get enough kills to run out of ammo.

All BF have been like this in my experience. Have to go through an unpleasant learning phase before things get really fun.

I could always kill more nazis, bring on WWII with Frostbite 3!

Amen!
Somebody should come up with a WWII shooter that puts the US vs The Russians fighting over Germany. Kind of like an alternate universe type thing.

The Vietnam era was tried several years back (2003-2008 or so), with several FPS set during the Vietnam War. Most all of them were busts that never caught on.

True enough in some respects... Part of what makes me so much more terrible in BF4--as compared to BF3 performance--is the fact that the maps are nowhere near as imprinted into my head as BF3 maps.

We do forget we are competing against often much more map memory, which contributes to a majority of the skill displayed in play, at least when performed regularly by players. One-offs can be shown by pure skill, but that same skill-only player, without map memory, will have very bad rounds. We forget our inconsistencies and bad play at the release of new maps, or of whole new games.

That said, BF4 has character movement that just feels very different from 3. That and other issues, both planned differences and the unplanned bugs, have been causing the game to simply feel very different. BF3 did not actually feel that much different, at least on PC with KB&M, from BFBC2. And I am of the opinion it is not just different, but a complete 180º in the wrong direction for PC controls. BF3 was not the best example of purist PC controls and multiplayer netcode, but it was better in every way than in the shape BF4 remains. I hear in the latest beta testing they have made significant strides, but I cannot speak of the experience.

Thats exactly what Gen. Patton wanted to do. A game where GSP gets his way and we kick the Russians' arses while we were in the arse kicking mood would be awesome.

I swear... we have hipster video game players now. I only liked battlefield when it wasn't popular... 2142 or go home...

I logged over 969 hours playing BF3 but haven't touched it since BF4's release. There isnt a whole lot of difference between the two as far as gameplay, but BF4 is more polished. Things were a little wonky with the server tick rates for a while, but that was patched and now all is well, but to each their own.

You have to go back and make that an even 1000.

Shoot, die, respawn, shoot, die, respawn, shoot, die, respawn, shoot, die, respawn, shoot, die, respawn, shoot, die, respawn, shoot, die, respawn. Yay! So fun!

Honestly after playing Fallout 3, every other game that has shooting mechanics in comparison just seemed too shallow and boring to play.

There's a reason 2142 was unpopular......it sucked. BTW, isn't it the unpopular out of the norm stuff that hipsters go for? Wouldn't that make you the hipster?

Yep, I should go back to my favorite stomping grounds of the Nosehair Canals and get those 29.5 hours. :D

What. BF2 and 2142 were extremely popular.

Shoot, die, respawn, shoot, die, respawn, shoot, die, respawn, shoot, die, respawn, shoot, die, respawn, shoot, die, respawn, shoot, die, respawn. Yay! So fun!

Your point of comparison is fallout 3? Which has possibly the most simplistic gun-gameplay in any game featuring guns ever/

If that's all the effort you put into it there is no wonder you spend more time dead and respawning. Not sure how 32 real humans trying to kill you in real time is shallow and boring, but being able to freeze time and target specific body parts while you eat a sammich isn't...

You compare it to FO3???? Shoot shoot shoot shoot shoot shoot *ENTER VAT MODE* SELECT SELECT SELECT *Slow mo recap of your selections as the game plays itself for you* Shoot shoot shoot shoot shoot *DEAD*.

Seriously?

I love Nosehair. I actually keep BF3 installed just to play that map...I'd consider BF3 a complete game just based on that map alone. So much kill, so much rage, very fun yes.

What. BF2 and 2142 were extremely popular.

^^^ This. However 2142 wasn't that popular (however I loved the stompy mechs, some of the maps, and OMG Titan mode was amazing when it was eventually patched). I'd love to see a 2143.

I mean when you put shooting alone, as in the sole thing you do in a game is run around and shoot things, I can't play that anymore.

Anyway, there's no such thing as simplistic or complex shooting, it's all the same, aim and shoot.

That's a better explanation -- you're just not as into FPS games. That being said, there's a good deal more than "aim-->shoot". Just off the top of my head from a game two nights ago:
- Target selection and prioritization
- Positioning, positioning, positioning (key)
- With above, map knowledge (key)
- Situational awareness (key)
- Enemy psych eval (yes, you can gauge the people you are playing against)
- Troll to induce rage, capitalize on stupid headrush into your position)
