I'd sink as much cash as possible into some good speakers now and worry about amplification and processing later. Or, if you don't mind looking a bit nerdy, invest in a really good soundcard, some headphone amps, and a few pairs of Beyerdynamic DT770s (which for speech and low frequency reproduction can go toe-to-toe with high-end HT gear.)

i never go back to the amplifier of a receiver again. They just don't push out any descent power.

You might have a small (or not-so-small) efficiency issue. A set of really efficient speakers is the difference in going from 1WPC to 1,000WPC.

I haven't done that. I'll try that next chance I get.

Wow, I'm lazy.

I still haven't done this... even though it's quite hot in here lately.

I tried a temp. reading again and got over 139 degrees F

Don't want to turn off AC long enough to run Audyssey? ;)

What's a safe operating temperature for a receiver? Thanks for taking the temp reading. I'll probably stay away from that receiver, because I don't have a ton of space for breathing room around a receiver that big.

I haven't updated the OP, but all the audio upgrades are going to have to wait a while :(. I was debating between getting a new receiver or a new computer monitor, and the computer monitor won. I upgraded from a 20" non-widescreen to a 24" widescreen (Dell 2408WFP), and the difference is astounding. I wasn't overly pleased with the upgrade I would get from a $400 receiver, especially with keeping my same speakers. I'm not sure when I'll do my audio upgrade, but it's definitely going to be a while, and I want it to be a very substantial upgrade.

The real question, in my mind, is whether you're likely to upgrade your amp before you upgrade your receiver, or if you have delusions of a prepro/amp setup at some point.

I'm torn. I think the amp on my receiver is pretty reasonable for my general home theater usage, but I have approached its limits and been somewhat less than amazed, so I could see using a better amp. But that's only about 1% of the time, and it's kinda difficult to justify plunking down another grand for a good set of amps based on that.

I think below 60C is ok? I haven't really looked much.

It usually doesn't get that hot, but I had the air conditioner off for a while and it got up to 84 F ambient in the room.

That would certainly make a difference. My house never gets above 73 while I'm home.

don't bother, in your price range, you won't find one, even if you did find out, the preout section is probably really noisy, so you will want to upgrade it right away anyway.
