I value gameplay over gfx. Planescape:Torment is an amazing game. Mabe the best RPG ever made in my book. What's unique about it is it is actually INTERESTING, unlike BG or NWN.
Playing Planescape is like reading a great book... I never finished the game because there's some kind of a curse on me. lol
Every time I got close to the "fortress of regrets" something would happen... The 1st time, I was getting a new PC, and forgot to backup my save. The data was gone with that old HD.
The 2nd time my HD died, and I couldnt recover my saves. The 3rd time when I was getting yet another new PC, I backed up my saves onto a CD. I checked to see if they were inded backed up. The crazy thing, is that once I got a new PC and loaded up that CD to get my saves and finish the game, the CD was EMPTY!!! There was nothing on it... Needless to say I felt like bashing my head on the wall. No way I'm pasing this game for the 4th time now... But who knows...
I doubt there'll ever be another game like Planescape since companies like Interplay and Black Isle are dead. They were the best, because they were about innovation, risks, and new ideas; - something that's lacking in games these days. Game designers today think that staying close to the original formula and dazzling a player with flashy gfx is more important than doing something new and interesting.
As for gameplay over GFX... Here's an example:
Recently I got my hands on C&C3 demo. It wasnt awesome, but it was good. I noticed many units and gameplay elements that were taken from Tiberian Sun. I suddenly remembered that I never finished the whole campaign in TS.
I got my dusty TS disk from the shelf installed it and started playing. Sure the gfx are terrible, and the gameplay is so old... It's inclonvenient that you cant select units of the same type with a double click, and you have to left click to move instead of right click. But this game is still somehow BETTER than all the crap being released by EA. Even after all these years, a game made by Westwood still shines. The game has a SOUL to it - something that the new incarnations are lacking. It has some destructable terrain, such as ice which can be destroyed to have tanks drop underwater and "die" instantly.. It has night and day effects... It has very interesting music, which can get annoying after a while, but you gotta admit it's quite unique... The units are so cool... So much diversity! You have things such as "multi missle", cyborg commando, a flying saucer and Mammmoth MKII Walker". See.. back then they really tried to come up with something new... In C&C3 they mostly "copycat" from the older games, because they are afraid of any signifficant changes. That shows that these days, it's all about money and not about appeasing the gamer community. If the game stays close to original formula it will at least sell a number of copies, but if the game has too much new elements it can FAIL miserably!! The designers clearly dont want to take that chance.
It's really quite a shame. I consider myself lucky to have been a teenager back at the time when the gaming industry was just starting to develop, and back when games were actually good.
